Katadyn Group

The history of Katadyn goes back to an invention of Professor Alexander Krause from Munich to use electrolysis to deposit silver ions in water in order to clean it bacteriologically.

Last century, Katadyn started production of ceramic filters in the 1930s and moved its headquarters to Switzerland. In 1954, the company moved to a building in Wallisellen.

In the 1970s, Katadyn expanded its operations to include municipal water treatment with UV irradiation.

At the end of the 1980s, production was concentrated and expanded with a new building at the Wallisellen site. This new building led to considerable financial burdens, which made refinancing necessary in the mid 1990s.

At the beginning of 1997, Adrian Schmassmann took over operational management and launched an extensive restructuring program, which led to the company being profitable once again as of 1998.

At the end of 1998, Adrian Schmassmann together with other members of management acquired the Katadyn Group as part of a management buyout.

In 1999, activities in the UV water treatment sector were merged with the German competitor WEDECO, and the company went public.

In 2001, Katadyn was able to take over the two American companies Exstream and PUR Outdoor, which made it the largest supplier of portable water treatment systems. Portable seawater desalination systems were added through PUR Outdoor.

The French subsidiary was established in 2002 by buying a reseller, and a sales office was opened in Singapore.

The takeover of Trekking-Mahlzeiten GmbH in Germany followed in 2004 and entry into the field of freeze-dried outdoor nourishment. Increased vertical integration was also initiated through the company's own production of plastic components.

Optimus Sweden was purchased at the end of 2007, which complemented the product range with outdoor stoves.

At the end of 2009 Katadyn expanded its sphere of operations into the industrial and municipal water treatment sector by acquiring a majority stake in AQUAFIDES Switzerland and Germany
