Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends of Katadyn,

After a rainy summer across much of Europe, fall has arrived here in Switzerland in recent weeks showing off its best side. Sunny weather has enticed many outdoor enthusiasts into the mountains to hike, bike or climb. Along the trails and paths, mountain sports athletes can always find springs to quench their thirst when out and about. But care is needed here: We often assume it’s completely safe to fill up our bottles at mountain springs. It seems, however, that the supposedly clean water in Alpine springs often exceeds the limits considered safe to drink. Read more about that in this newsletter.

And don’t forget to enjoy a carefree fall outdoors in nature!

Trix Ammann

Executive Director

The Katadyn Group says “no” to mineral water in PET bottles

The Katadyn Group says “no” to mineral water in PET bottles

Katadyn Products Inc. in Switzerland and Katadyn Germany GmbH made a decision not to use mineral water in plastic PET bottles in their offices as of August. Instead, every associate is given his or her own reusable stainless steel bottle from Klean Kanteen. Bottles can be filled at a water dispenser that supplies non-carbonated water as well as cooled carbonated water with the push of a button. In 2013, approximately 15,000 liters of mineral water in plastic PET bottles were used at Katadyn Products Inc. offices. With the move to using tap water, we hope to make a small contribution toward protecting the environment.

Enterobacteria in village springs: Use a filter on the “yucky" water!

Enterobacteria in village springs: Use a filter on the “yucky" water!

Fresh, clean drinking water directly from the source. Many outdoor sports enthusiasts embrace this feeling and fill their bottles at mountain and village springs. Unfortunately, an investigation by the Office for Food Safety of the Swiss canton of Graubünden contradicts this ideal. Among approximately 30 springs in the canton of Graubünden, every third contained too much enterobacteria, mostly coming from neighboring cow pastures. The concentration in one spring was even classified as a health hazard. In summary: Visually clear water can be deceiving. The only way to be sure about drinking water in the Alpine region is to filter it to avoid unpleasant surprises.  Filtering is the fastest way to make potable water from water contaminated with bacteria. The filtered water can be consumed immediately, and the process is easy. The minute pores of the filter (0,0002 mm) simply catch pathogens. Easy drinking water filters, such as the Katadyn MyBottle or the Katadyn Hiker Pro, are tailored to the needs of hiking and biking.  They guarantee safe drinking water any time, and can be taken along without a problem. These filters are available at outdoor and sports retailers.

The Katadyn Group at the OutDoor trade show in Friedrichshafen

The Katadyn Group at the OutDoor trade show in Friedrichshafen

The global outdoor industry again gathered at the OutDoor show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, this year from July 10-13. The Katadyn Group launched a number of new products from the Katadyn kitchens, Optimus and Trek’n Eat. Attendees were able to get a good look on-site at the new Optimus Polaris Multi-Fuel stove, which guarantees a warm meal at any time, in any situation when you are on the road. The new Katadyn gravity filters Katadyn Base Camp Pro 10L and Katadyn Gravity Camp 6L attracted huge interest from retailers. With a flow rate of up to 2 liters per minute, clean and safe water is available any time when on an adventure – without having to pump a stroke. In the United States, both water filters are already available; in Europe, they will be at retail in early 2015. Trek’n Eat introduced some new products too: Two vegan freeze-dried outdoor meals are now livening up the menu with culinary delights never experienced before. In addition, a hearty Potato Stew with Beef and Beans offers something for more substantial appetites. Extreme and endurance athletes are well served with Peronin Orange High-tech Whole Grain Muesli. New Trek’n Eat meals are available now at retail in Europe.

At the OutDoor trade show, industry and retail B2B magazine outdoor.markt lauded Katadyn as an industry high achiever for the fifth year in a row. The Swiss Katadyn Group won over the jury, which named it “Highest Achiever” of the year. Summer 2015 Outdoor Retailer Show

Katadyn really wowed buyers with its new Ultra Flow Filter Technology™. Being able to demonstrate the speed and adaptability of the new Katadyn gravity filters Base Camp Pro 10L and Gravity Camp 6L reinforced Katadyn’s reputation as a legendary leader in water treatment. Optimus impressed as well when the new Polaris Optifuel stove was unveiled. The Polaris is a multi-fuel stove that can operate on LPG canisters as well as a number of liquid fuels, all on the same burner jet. This stove provides optimum versatility and allows for cooking in even the most unfavorable conditions. Most people were delighted at how easy the stove was to use, as well as the ability to clean it while it’s still lit. “Genius!” was the typical response we heard. Overall the Katadyn Group booth at the Outdoor Retailer show was abuzz with excitement for all the new products!

Katadyn Germany supports DAV 2016 women’s expedition team

Katadyn Germany supports DAV 2016 women’s expedition team

The new DAV (German Alpine Club) expedition’s women’s team can once again count on support from Katadyn Germany. At the traditional annual summit with the DAV at the OutDoor show in Friedrichshafen, six women athletes were introduced to those present. They had already run a bit of a marathon, dashing around the halls to all of the team’s partners. The women had gotten to know each of their partners and their contacts at each of the booths -- Mountain Equipment, Edelrid, Katadyn, Leki and Julbo Eyewear. They also were given their first pieces of gear along the way. If the team gets to the summit just as persevering, cheerful and professional as it was in the show halls, then we needn’t worry about their success as alpinists.

Peronin and Trek'n Eat at Marathon des Sables 2014

Peronin and Trek'n Eat at Marathon des Sables 2014

Marathon des Sables is a demanding stage ultra-marathon that takes place over seven days and covers approximately 240 kilometers (149 miles) across the Moroccan Sahara. Temperatures this year reached as high as 47 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit). Participants received only rationed water and emergency tents. Food, apparel, etc., had to be arranged and carried by the extreme athletes themselves. The fastest German this year was Thomas Brust. After the race, we received the following note from him, which we thank him for: “Since we have to organize our own food, I chose products from Trek’n Eat. That was the right decision, I found. For several days all I had available were freeze-dried meals and nuts; thus, meals such as the Trek'n Eat Venison Stew  and the Chicken in Curried Rice were welcome changes. What really saved me in particular on the long 81-kilometer (50-mile) stage was Peronin. After having problems with a lack of water, I could give myself a boost again with a double portion of Peronin. Since I can digest the products really well, I plan to use them in the future too running and in training. Thanks for these great products.”

School project OFF ROAD uses Trek'n Eat

School project OFF ROAD uses Trek'n Eat

The goal of the experiential school project OFF ROAD from the German Agency for Social Welfare in Essen is to strengthen the self-esteem of youth with group outdoor experiences. Participants learned to overcome their physical and mental limits on a five-day trek in the Southern Palatinate to return to everyday life with increased strength from success. Katadyn Germany supports the project with freeze-dried meals from Trek’n Eat.

Product training for independent retailers

Product training for independent retailers

To ensure customers receive the best possible advice at retail, Katadyn has hit the road for a series of trainings at specialty retailers. Everything that is sold must be tried  out or tasted at the training. At German retailer BigTree.de, sales rep Erick Schönhofer introduced Optimus cook systems, freeze-dried outdoor meals from Trek’n Eat, as well as the ever popular Katadyn water filters.

"Handi cap au large"

"Handi cap au large"

Four French outdoor enthusiasts, including a paraplegic, have set themselves the goal to cross the Alps from Liezen in Austria all the way to Monaco, using only a paraglider and a handcycle. They are making this dream a reality this summer: 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), shaped by friendship, solidarity and an environmentally friendly method of forward motion. Katadyn France is supporting the athletes with an Optimus Vega stove and freeze-dried outdoor meals from Trek’n Eat.

"Deep in Baffin" with Trek'n Eat

"Deep in Baffin" with Trek'n Eat

The Frenchman François Kern traveled last May with three friends in the eastern part of Baffin Island in Canada. The goal of the expedition was to explore the most beautiful peak of the region using climbing gear and downhill skis. The 28-day adventure was one of pure isolation. Katadyn France supported the team with Optimus Nova stoves and cookware from Optimus, Trek’n Eat meals for the entire length of the expedition, as well as Nemo Canon sleeping bags. “The Nova stoves from Optimus were very reliable,” François Kern wrote us. “We melted snow with them, cooked tea, and prepared our freeze-dried Trek’n Eat meals too. The 15 different Trek’n Eat meals from breakfast to dinner to desserts tasted fantastic and were a welcome change on the tour. Our favorite was the Blueberry Fruit Soup and the Chocolate Mousse, into which we sometimes mixed Trek’n Eat Muesli."

Chikungunya Epidemic on West Indies islands

Chikungunya Epidemic on West Indies islands

Since December 2013, the Chikungunya virus has continued to spread in the Antilles and in French Guiana. According to the last statistics from the French National Hygiene Institute (INVS), 115,000 people have been reported as coming down with the virus, 39 of which have died (mostly the elderly and children). In Guadeloupe, where the epidemic has hit the hardest, 5,600 people per week have sought medical attention. Fifteen percent of the population has been infected with the virus. Chikungunya’s symptoms include a high fever and intense joint pain. There is as of yet no effective medication to treat the disease, with only Paracetamol being used to ease the pain. The virus is spread by mosquitoes. Mosquito repellents and mosquito nets are helpful in slowing the spread of disease.   In August, Katadyn France delivered to the West Indies 19,000 bottles of Biovectrol Tropique from the French Brand Pharmavoyage. This mosquito repellent should aid the population in its battle with the Chikungunya virus.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team to use Peronin in Volvo Ocean Race

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team to use Peronin in Volvo Ocean Race

The Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team started  the Volvo Ocean Race on Oct. 4. The sailing regatta takes place every three years and takes teams from the harbor of Alicante, Spain, around the world in approximately nine months. Due to wind and weather conditions, it is considered of the toughest challenges in sailing sports. The Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team has already relied in its training on the complete nutrition of Peronin, which was developed especially for the high demands of performance sports. “We found Peronin to be a great product during our training period in Portugal when trying to push up the calorie-count of the sailors food-bags. Any product that is minimal on space and weight compared to its fat/calorie/nutritional benefits is ideal obviously for boats. It particularly had its place during very rough weather when cooking becomes too difficult - and it's in these scenarios that we'll mainly be using Peronin during the race,” says Alexandra Wardall, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team member.

Katadyn Group Sponsors Northwest Passage bid

Katadyn Group Sponsors Northwest Passage bid

While it may not be everyone’s dream, sailing the Northwest Passage through the Artic was on Ellen Leonard’s list. With Katadyn’s support, Ellen set out to become the first and youngest female Skipper to do so in one season. Ellen and her husband Seth are also outdoor enthusiasts, so they know and appreciate the quality of Katadyn Group’s outdoor products. For this particular adventure, Katadyn sponsored them with a Katadyn Power Survivor 40E as well as a manual Survivor 06 for all of their water purifying needs. Due to the size of their boat, they were not able to carry as much potable water as they had on other boats, making the ability to purify their water even more important. With map in hand and boat in the water, the set out on what was to be an incredible adventure. Unfortunately all the planning and preparing in the world sometimes is no match to Mother Nature. After only one month of sailing 15 foot ocean swells set in and they encountered some incredible seasickness, not to mention a malfunctioning wind vane steering gear that would only steer them in circles. With heavy hearts, they decided to take a different route and head toward Vancouver Island to rest and repair their boat. And while it may not have gone as planned, they still plan to tackle the Northwest Passage again next year, with Katadyn by their side. To learn more about Ellen and Seth and Katadyn’s sponsorship go to gonefloatabout.com.
