Editorial

Dear Friends of Katadyn,

After the beautiful outdoor summer, we were able luckily to forget all about the wet and soggy spring. Recent months bestowed many warm and sunny days for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy outside. Weather – at least here in central Europe – was perfect for hiking, biking or just simply relaxing outdoors. Our "Camp Kitchen" with its Katadyn water filters, stoves and accessories by Optimus, and delicious Trek'n Eat meals was used all over the world. We were quite excited to get lots of feedback about it.

With the creative impetus from our wonderful summer, the Katadyn Group is powering into the fall. The heads of our product managers in the Optimus kitchen are smoking with ideas, and already we have two additional kitchen aids ready for use outdoors: the Optimus Burny lighter, and the super lightweight and extra long folding spoon made of titan. It makes eating outdoor meals directly from the pouch much simpler.

Take advantage of these great days to pack up your entire camp kitchen by the Katadyn Group and head into the outdoors!

Have fun!

Trix Ammann

CEO

Optimus product family grows yet again

New: Optimus Burny lighter and Optimus Folding Ti Long Spoon

After Optimus launched numerous new products at the OutDoor Show in Friedrichshafen, we’re introducing yet another two items: Lighting your store or campfire, even in wind and rain, won’t be a problem anymore with the powerful Optimus Burny lighter. This lighter is refillable from a standard butane refill can or - using an adapter (sold separately) - from your screw valve canister. The new Optimus Folding Ti Long Spoon is a space-saving, foldable spoon made of lightweight titan. It was specially developed to be able to comfortably eat outdoor meals directly out of the pouch, such as those from Trek’n Eat. Both products should make meal prep and mealtimes for outdoor enthusiasts even more pleasant.

Katadyn North America at Outdoor Retailer Trade Show in Salt Lake City

Katadyn North America at Outdoor Retailer Trade Show in Salt Lake City

Katadyn North America presented our numerous new products from the Optimus family at this year’s Outdoor Retailer Show, held Aug. 6- 9 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The new, highly efficient Elektra FE Cook System and the Crux Lite Piezo Gas Stove with separate Piezo ignition were real attractions. Katadyn North America presented for the first time a complete outdoor cooking experience under one roof with water filters by Katadyn, stoves and kitchen accessories from Optimus, and outdoor meals and snacks by AlpineAire. Katadyn North America expanded its product offering the end of 2012 with dehydrated and freeze-dried meals, and is proud to now be able to offer its retailers a complete outdoor cooking and meal lineup.

Katadyn Germany at Caravan Salon

Katadyn Germany at Caravan Salon

Katadyn Germany exhibited its camping and RV/caravan product portfolio at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf  from Aug. 31-Sept. 8. With its new program Katadyn Germany has created its very own “German Purity Law”. Products from Micropur, certisil, certinox and certiman protect vehicles both inside and out.  Thousands of show attendees found out more about what’s possible and how the products work and learned firsthand why Katadyn is the right partner not only for purifying drinking water and cleaning water tanks, but also for special cleaners and care products for RV/caravan and boat surfaces. “All of the very thoughtful questions that attendees asked demonstrated that they recognize the importance of proper cleaning and care of water tanks and vehicles,” said Steffen Fuchs, marketing for Katadyn Germany. “We were able to establish the significance of our products from certiman, certisil, certinox and micropur in high-quality conversations with attendees and retailers. That was very exciting.”

Katadyn France at the Sport Achat Show in Lyon

Katadyn France at the Sport Achat Show in Lyon

On September 9 and 10, the French town of Lyon was visited by more than 1'500 visitors for the semi-annual Sport Achat Trade Fair. Katadyn France was also on site, presenting the new Optimus stoves and accessories and the ultralite sleeping pads of the US brand Nemo, for which Katadyn France is the distributor. This year, Katadyn France was happy to welcome Light My Fire CEO Callil Odqvist-Jagusch, who spent two days at the booth. Katadyn France has been distributing the Light My Fire brand since many years.

Katadyn at MSPO in Kielce, Poland

Katadyn at MSPO in Kielce, Poland

Katadyn with its Polish partner Polana worked together as exhibitors from Sept. 2-4 at one of the three largest and most significant military shows in Europe – the MSPO in Kielce, Poland. MSPO is the leading trade show for central and East European countries for the segments of defense and equipment technology. The presentation of water treatment systems by Katadyn drew high interest from show attendees. A particular draw was the mobile MOT-7 Filter Unit by Katadyn that reliably provides safe and clean drinking water for troops in the field. The demo unit at the booth enabled show visitors in a relaxed atmosphere to filter water with the Katadyn filter and to demonstrate for themselves how simple and effective the system is. Representatives from army units, security forces and even outdoor store operators found the use of solutions presented by Katadyn for military uses and security areas extremely useful.

Aquafides at Aquatech

Aquafides at Aquatech

Aquafides will exhibit with its own booth at the Aquatech show in Amsterdam Nov. 5-8. Aquatech is the leading show globally for trade representatives from the areas of water, process and wastewater technologies. Aquafides has accumulated decades of experience in the UV disinfection, Katadyn filtration and Electro-Katadyn segments. Aquafides has been part of the Katadyn Group since late 2009 as the brand expanded its business into the category of industrial and community water treatment and took over majority ownership of Aquafides Switzerland and Germany. We look forward to your visit at booth number 03.213.

Katadyn and Optimus win top ratings in outdoorseiten.net tests

Katadyn and Optimus win top ratings in outdoorseiten.net tests

Outdoorseiten.net is the largest German-language forum for outdoor sport and survival, hiking, mountaineering, climbing, paddlesports, travel reporting and photography. Over the summer, editors put various products from Katadyn and Optimus to the test with youthful users. They included the Katadyn Combi water filter, the Optimus Vega gas stove and the Optimus Terra HE cook system. All of the products earned top ratings in testing and were easily operated by the young testers after only a short introduction.

Optimus Vega test winner in Finnish Outdoor Mag

Optimus Vega test winner in Finnish Outdoor Mag

Optimus Vega has again come out as a test winner. The major Outdoor Magazine Retki in Finland tested in a summer issue the Vega alongside a number of strong competitors. The Vega came out with top results and was particularly appreciated for its low weight, low gravity, high stability, quick performance and a versatile flame which can be used with many different sized pots.

Robijns B.V. takes over Benlux Optimus distribution

Robijns B.V. takes over Benlux Optimus distribution

As of 2014, Netherlands-based Robijns B.V. will take over distribution of outdoor stove brand Optimus in the Benelux countries. Pre-orders can be placed with Robijns now for Optimus. Robijns represents the brands Katadyn and Trek'n Eat  in The Netherlands as well as the brand Optimus in the entire Benelux region. In Belgium and Luxembourg, the distribution of Katadyn filters, Micropur and Trek’n Eat will continue with our longtime partner Elements BVBA.

Robijns B.V. is located in Aalsmeer in The Netherlands. The company was founded in 1915 as a family business, and today is one of the most important distributors for the outdoor and sports industry in the Benelux countries. For years, the dealer has represented premium brands such as Katadyn, Recta and Suunto. Robijns calls itself a "brand-builder" and specializes specifically in independent retailers. With that focus, it has been able in recent years to significantly grow sales of brands it represents. With the Optimus brand, the company hopes to further strengthen its market position. Robijns stresses optimal inventory management systems, efficient logistics and a strong focus on after-sales service. Thus, the approach of the Katadyn Group matches the style of the Dutch dealer. In addition, Robijns has good connections to local media and puts high value on targeted marketing communications.

"We are proud to add the Optimus brand to our portfolio of outdoor products," says Victor Benard, director of Robijns. "Optimus has manufactured quality stoves for more than 110 years and fits perfectly into our current group of premium brands."

Starting immediately, retailers can place their Optimus pre-orders with Robijns. Current sales through 2013, however, will be run by our present partner Jongejans. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Jongejans for the excellent collaboration in the past years.

"We are convinced we have found a partner in Robijns B.V. that can ideally distribute our Optimus brand in the Benelux countries," says Trix Ammann, CEO of Katadyn Products Inc.

UV lamp production to move to Switzerland

UV lamp production to move to Switzerland

UVC low-pressure lamps have proved to be the most efficient light source for water treatment. The lights, which are used in our Aquafides systems, satisfy the highest demands for efficiency, cost effectiveness and lifespan. By the end of the year, the production of these lamps will be relocated from the current site in Germany to the headquarters of the Katadyn Group in Switzerland. That is where final assembly of UV systems now takes place. This step will shorten demands for production transport and make procedures more efficient. The Katadyn Group produces UV lights for its own systems as well as replacement lamps for all well-known brands.

Another 20,000 Optimus cook systems for Sweden’s troops

Another 20,000 Optimus cook systems for Sweden’s troops

An additional 20,000 Optimus cook systems will be shipped to the Swedish army the end of August. The military stove system has modular construction and consists of a Crux Gas Stove with Piezo ignition, a newly developed windscreen, a spirits stove, cook pots with a capacity of 1.8 fluid liters, cutlery, a fire-resistant and multifunctional cloth, and additional practical cooking accessories. Since most of the components are made of anodized aluminum, the entire set weighs less than 1,100 grams and is stowable in its own small bag. This modular system optimally equips troops for both long- and short-term deployments in both warm and cold climates.

400 Katadyn Survivor 06LL desalinators for the French army

This summer, Katadyn France equipped the French army with 400 manual Survivors 06. The desalinators will be used for aircraft purposes. Katadyn's manual watermakers are intended for emergency use if electrical power is not available. Compact, lightweight, and easy to operate, these units will supply drinking water to help prevent dehydration or even loss of life. The Katadyn Survivor 06 is the smallest hand-operated desalinator in the world. It is recommended for emergency use on liferafts or airplanes or in individual survival kits. Katadyn desalinators are trusted by  militaries and individuals around the globe.

Katadyn Germany takes over distribution of Klean Kanteen

Katadyn Germany takes over distribution of Klean Kanteen

On Jan. 1, 2014, Katadyn Germany GmbH will take over the distribution of Klean Kanteen in  Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. With this move, Katadyn Germany GmbH will expand its product lineup to include the high-quality water bottles and insulated containers of stainless steel from the U.S. brand. The products by Klean Kanteen, a small family business with headquarters in Chico, Calif., are in particular characterized by no use of BPA and the use of stainless steel as a healthy, safe and particularly environmentally friendly alternative to plastic and coated aluminum water bottles. Klean Kanteen perfectly suits Katadyn’s product portfolio and company philosophy regarding health, sustainability and environmental awareness. We are very excited about this additional asset to our product line and look forward to taking advantage of future cooperative synergy. Klean Kanteen has been engaged in the “1% for the Planet” program as a member since 2008 and donates 1 percent of its annual sales to non-profits that are involved in the areas of health and environment. In addition to classic water and sport bottles, the product offering from Klean Kanteen includes baby bottles, insulated mugs, and vacuum-insulated containers for food. Klean Kanteen is the perfect complement to every outdoor kitchen!

Clean water in Africa thanks to Swiss filter technology

Clean water in Africa thanks to Swiss filter technology

“Katadyn – they are my friends!” This from Martin Suhr, the director of international programs for World Vision about his 17 years living in Sambia, Rwanda and Zimbabwe. He and his family as well as his associates relied on water filters from Katadyn for their daily drinking water needs. All over the world, clean water means life and growth; on the other hand, dirty water is tied to illness, disease epidemics and suffering. That’s why tools for treating water that are easy to use and reliable are of such high value. Martin Suhr has experience with different types of filters from Katadyn. For four years, he used a model that attached directly to the faucet. After that, he and his team (seven people all together) used a Katadyn Drip filter, where the top part is filled with dirty water and it comes out clean from the bottom.

Millet Expedition Project : the Khuiten ascent

Millet expedition Projet : the Khuiten ascent

Katadyn France is proud to have sponsored 4 mountain climbers who realized their dream within the Millet Expedition Project and completed a successful expedition to Mongolia. They started their expedition by following 356 kms of bike paths during 7 days in total autonomy, heading to the base camp of Mount Khuiten (4374 m). They successfully climbed Khuiten in difficult weather conditions. They came back last month and declared : “The total absence of human presence for miles around confirms that we have found what we were looking for: adventure and freedom." They particularly appreciated our reliable Optimus Nova stove that they could use in all weather conditions !

Extreme mountaineer Ueli Steck loves the Optimus Vega

On his expedition to Everest this year, Swiss extreme mountaineer Ueli Steck also had an Optimus Vega in his pack. His opinion is enthusiastic: “The Optimus Vega functioned superbly on Everest. We used the stove in Camp 2 at 6,500 meters. Its performance was perfect! I was very satisfied with the stove. The Optimus Vega is the ideal stove for either base camp or permanent camps. The option of turning over the gas cartridge when you need to is quite brilliant – especially in the morning when it’s cold.” In the fall, Ueli Steck will head out to Nepal again to take on the south face of Annapurna. Katadyn has supported Ueli Steck since 2009 with products for water treatment, expedition meals by Trek’n Eat, as well as outdoor stoves and stove accessories from Optimus.

Final expedition of the DAV women’s expedition team

The eight women on the first women’s expedition team of the DAV (German Alpine Club) have been on their final expedition in India’s Satling Valley since the middle of September. There, they want to succeed at various first ascents and climbs. Katadyn Germany supports the young alpinists with Optimus Crux gas stoves, an Optimus Nova multi-fuel stove, cookware from Optimus, freeze-dried meals from Trek'n Eat and Micropur. Wilderness coder relies on Katadyn Pocket

Wilderness coder relies on Katadyn Pocket

Thomas Backlund, a Swedish Engineer and computer coder decided about half a year ago to quit his job, move out of his apartment, sell his belongings and move into the Swedish wilderness. The rationale for this major life change was to enable him to work fully on his startup project. Now coding in the forest, he also blogs about his daily life out there. As for any long time venture in the wilderness, the Katadyn Pocket water filter is the solution to cater for daily needs of clean water.

Trek’n Eat at the toughest ultracycling race

Trek’n Eat at the toughest ultracycling race

The top long-distance cycle racers in the world came together Aug. 15-18 at the Tortour race in Switzerland. The Tortour has turned into one of the leading ultracycling events in the world in the last 5 years. It covers more than 1,000 kilometers and climbs 14,500 meters all across Switzerland. Taking part was a four-person team, the IG Windschatten (“IG Slipstream”) from Lucerne, Switzerland – known among enthusiasts as a spin-off of the Velokurier Luzern (“Bike Messengers Lucerne”). The Katadyn Group supports the dedicated athletes with freeze-dried meals from Trek'n Eat and Optimus (H)EAT Insulation Pouches. "Planning nutrition was for us a very important aspect,” said Cyrill Hutter, a member of IG Windschatten. “It was quickly clear that it would be vital to be able to make available day and night a variety of calorie-dense meals to both riders and team assistants. We knew that all participants in this non-stop bike race were going to be pressed by time and, thus, wouldn’t have any time left to cook. With these Trek’n Eat meals, our demands were fully satisfied. The preparation proved to be quite simple and quick. Particularly with endurance performance, it’s very important to find the right balance of energy supply, digestibility and taste. Riders as well as team assistants really appreciated it to be able to eat a variety of satisfying meals at any time during the race. The nutritional help of Trek’n Eat meals was most certainly a factor that contributed to our team placing a successful 13th in the 2013 Tortour.” Congratulations on this stupendous performance!

Peronin at the Swiss Olympic Gigathlon

Peronin at the Swiss Olympic Gigathlon

The starting gun went off July 7 for this year’s Swiss Olympic Gigathlon. More than 6,000 male and female participants took part in this huge athletic challenge that includes inline skating, running, swimming, mountain biking and road cycling. Among the participants was Martin Kyburz who is supported by the Katadyn Group with Peronin, which offers complete nutrition for high performance demands. “For me it was quickly clear that Peronin had to be on my competition meal plan,” the endurance athlete wrote us. “I rely on Peronin because it offers me extensive and easily digestible meals that offer perfect nutrition in training and competition.”

The middle of August the team from Katadyn North America had a fun and informative day on the St. Croix River north of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Boats were filled to the brim with Katadyn water filters (including the Katadyn Base Camp - which is available in the U.S. only - and the Katadyn MyBottle) and new products from Optimus for 2014. Both the water filters and the new Optimus stoves were fully tested for lunch to prepare various, delicious outdoor meals from AlpineAire. Fun and friendly soccer game at Katadyn

Fun and friendly soccer game at Katadyn

On Sept. 13, associates at Katadyn Switzerland met up for a big soccer tournament, with Team Production facing off against Team Administration. After two losses in past hockey matches, Production could finally boast victory in the soccer tournament. Administration was beaten with a score of 9:6 after two halves. But the fun chat was the focus both on the field as well as on the sidelines. The following barbeque lent itself to plenty of post-game analysis and camaraderie.
