Letter from the CEO

Dear friends of Katadyn,

Fully in line with our Kaizen guiding principle of  continuous improvement, Katadyn Products Inc. moved to its new company headquarters in Kemptthal in mid-September. The new building with generously sized production areas, offices and warehousing facilities is only a fifteen-minute drive from our previous headquarters in Wallisellen, yet it was a great challenge to organize and carry out the relocation. We made every effort to minimize the loss of production time by efficient and careful planning and execution. Today I can say that we succeeded, and I thank our entire workforce very much for making this happen. I also owe my warmest thanks to our partners and customers for their understanding if they may have had to wait for a response to one or the other of their inquiries during the relocation.

The days are now getting shorter again and the leaves are becoming increasingly colorful. I hope that the sun will continue to shine for some time and invite you to an outdoor adventure or two and wish you golden autumn days. Exploring the nearby forest a couple of days ago, I found my first boletus mushroom. And a large one it was!

Trix Ammann

CEO

Optimus Vega gas stove will soon hit the store shelves

NEW: Optimus Vega remote gas stove

At the OutDoor trade show held in Friedrichshafen from July 12 – 15, 2012, the Katadyn Group presented its new Optimus Vega gas stove. Our dealerships expressed keen interest in the powerful remote canister stove. And in the stove test carried out by “Alpin” – a German magazine – the Optimus Vega was rated “excellent.” Production is now in full swing to ensure that the Optimus Vega will be available in stores starting in 2013. The Vega offers users two options for cooking: The efficiency mode is ideal for carefully controlled simmering. If a higher cooking capacity is needed, or if outdoor temperatures are particularly low, the integrated four-season mode is applied. The gas canister can be upended with a flick of the wrist, switching the stove to the liquid gas mode. The support legs are integrated in the valve housing and merely need to be extended. We are pleased to offer a stove in the form of the Optimus Vega that closes the gap between the technically often demanding gasoline stoves and the gas burners, which can only be used to a limited extent at subzero temperatures. Don’t hesitate to order this versatile stove today!

Great success of the Katadyn Group brands at the OutDoor trade show

The OutDoor trade show held in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from July 12 – 15 was once again a success for the Katadyn Group. We presented our Katadyn, Optimus, and Trek’n Eat brands under a single roof and displayed a number of innovations. Beside the new Optimus Vega gas stove, our new Trek'n Eat fish meals also met with keen interest. This Mediterranean fish stew containing rice and red fish curry gives outdoor sports fans all the power and energy they need. As all Trek'n Eat menus, the new fish dishes contain neither colorants nor preservatives or taste-enhancing additives and are distinguished by the “All Natural” label of Trek‘n Eat.

Katadyn supports the OFF ROAD school project

Katadyn supports the OFF ROAD school project

The OFF ROAD school project is a cooperation venture of different institutions in Germany. Children and youths with massive social and emotional disorders are to be enabled to experience the great outdoors. The primary goal of the project is to strengthen the self-confidence and self-esteem of young people who have become tired of learning and thus prepare them for regular schooling again. The project has been going on for some years now in the form of regular workshops and outdoor adventure tours of several days. In the current project trip, selected young people and their coaches will go on a ten-day hike to Italy. The route deliberately chosen for the tour will take the young people – who are equipped with backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, and insulating mats – through a region with little civilization. On their daily legs of about ten kilometers, they will learn to communicate and develop a sense of community. The Trek´n Eat meals allow the participants not only to enjoy a varied cuisine, but also to prepare the meals together and to experience a true outdoor feeling. “We are happy to support the OFF ROAD project with our products and can’t wait to receive the feedback from the participants. After all, our products are very varied, easy to prepare, healthy and wholesome, and of extremely light weight. We are certain that our products will also appeal to the palates of these young people,” says Steffen Fuchs, the marketing manager of Katadyn Germany, of the support offered in this project.

The Millet Expedition Project: 5th Night of the Expeditions

The Millet Expedition Project: 5th Night of the Expeditions

The great Night of the Expeditions will take place for the fifth time now in Chambéry, France, on November 17, 2012. The event is organized by Millet, the French producer of high-quality gear and apparel for climbers and alpinists. The Millet Expedition Project supports young and ambitious adventurers in making their projects come true. Along with other sponsors, Katadyn France is acting as a partner by providing selected expeditions with Katadyn water filters, Trek’n Eat meals, and Optimus stoves. During the Night of the Expeditions, the people taking part in the Millet expedition can present their adventures and top physical performance to a broad public. As many as 1000 persons are expected to attend. The presentations include spectacular projects such as a freeride adventure on Baffin Island or a sea kayak tour on Spitsbergen. During the 19 days in which he covered 400 kilometers, a kayak rider mainly lived on freeze-dried Trek'n Eat meals. For treating the water on his trip, he used Katadyn water treatment products. In the Night of the Expeditions (Nuit des expés), also the expeditions selected for 2013 will be announced.

Katadyn takes part in the final expedition of the DAV expedition cadre

Katadyn takes part in the final expedition of the DAV expedition cadre

On September 30, the young members of the 2010-12 expedition cadre of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein) set off for their final expedition to the Minya Konka mountain range in the Chinese province of Sichuan. They are accompanied by their trainer – the all-rounder mountain pro David Göttler – and the expedition physician Ulli Steiner. In all, the group has five weeks’ time to climb a nameless, 5910-meter granite giant never climbed before. The main reason for choosing this destination was the fact that it allows big-wall climbing (climbing tours up high rock faces lasting several days, with bivouacs in the face) and first ascents to be combined. Moreover, the region offers additional destinations for combined climbing in the form of rock-and-ice climbing tours. Katadyn Germany has supported the DAV expedition cadre for years by providing products of Katadyn, Optimus, and Trek’n Eat.

Young Swiss alpinist talents with Trek'n Eat in Peru

Young Swiss alpinist talents with Trek'n Eat in Peru

With its “High-performance Mountaineering” development program, the Swiss Alpine Club SAC supports young alpinists who have lofty ambitions. The nine-member youth expedition team can now look back on the successful completion of its three-year training: During the five-week expedition in the Cordillera Blanca in Peru, the team managed the demanding routes on the granite face of Esfinge, the scaling of all Huandoy peaks, and a first-climb on the rock columns of the Pisco Este. The young mountaineering talents were accompanied by two professional alpinists from Switzerland, Roger Schäli and Denis Burdet. What especially pleases SAC project manager Bruno Hasler beside the mountaineering feats is the fact that no accidents occurred during the expedition: “When nine young climbers, two mountain guides, and one doctor safely climb mountains during a total of 480 days in extremely different terrain, this goes to show the team’s quality. The athletes have grown into responsible climbers under the careful direction of their experienced mountain guides. The whole team deserves huge praise for this!” The three-year training of the team has now been officially completed with this final expedition. The SAC plans to continue the project and again to put together a team of young mountaineering talents. Katadyn Switzerland provided the young alpinists with freeze-dried Trek'n Eat expedition food.

Successful summit conquest with Trek'n Eat and Peronin

Successful summit conquest with Trek'n Eat and Peronin

The Slovak star mountain climber Peter Hámor scaled the K2 in early August, his tenth summit with an elevation of over eight thousand. He is thus a hot candidate for climbing all fourteen peaks with an elevation of over eight thousand. On May 17, 2012, he was the sole mountaineer this year to successfully ascend the Kanchenjunga (8586 m). He then returned to K2 (8611 m), where he had to abort his ascent five years ago at just over 8000 meters. This time, he succeeded: On August 1, 2012, Peter Hámor stood on top of K2. The Katadyn Group supports this ambitious alpinist by providing him with freeze-dried Trek’n Eat meals and the complete food Peronin.

Expedition to Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia

Expedition to Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia

The adventurers David Lim and Edwin Siew of Incredible Journeys Pte Ltd put our Katadyn Pocket Filter to the test during a four-day tour on Mount Kinabalu, which with its elevation of 4,095 meters is the highest peak in Malaysia. They transformed stale rain water into liters of filtered drinking water within a very short time. The positive result of our portable water filter amazed the two to such an extent that they plan to take along the Katadyn Pocket Filter also on their future expeditions.

From Munich to Tibet overland

From Munich to Tibet overland

Matthias Barth has long wished to send his expedition vehicle Bluey on a grand trip. He has now been on the road since the end of May and has already experienced a lot on his journey from Münich to Tibet. You can track his adventure trip, which he adorns with short stories, photos, and videos, on his blog. It is worth visiting! The adventurer is traveling with a Katadyn Pocket water filter in order to have pure drinking water at all times. Should he for once not find enough time for cooking a meal, Matthias can resort to a freeze-dried Trek'n Eat menu. Optimus pots for cooking more elaborate meals are also at his disposal in the vehicle. We wish Matthias a successful continuation of his unforgettable trip and good luck!

Volvo Ocean Race 2012 with Trek'n Eat

Volvo Ocean Race 2012 with Trek'n Eat

The Volvo Ocean Race, which has been held every three years since 1973, is considered to be one of the most grueling sailing challenges due to the wind and weather conditions. The 45,000 kilometers that the sailing teams cover on the high seas in nine months take them across oceans and past the continents of Asia, Africa, North and South America as well as Europe. The regatta started in Alicante, Spain, in October 2011 and ended in July this year in Galway, Ireland. Sailing crews from 15 different nations took part this year. The 11-member Groupama sailing team with the Frenchman Franck Cammas won the competition – relying among other things on our freeze-dried Trek’n Eat meals.

1333-kilometer Run for Kids – the END

1333-kilometer Run for Kids – the END

The Swiss long-distance runner Reto Hunziker made a dream come true. In the context of his project called “1333K Run for Kids,” he covered 1333 kilometers from the source of the Rhine River in Switzerland to its estuary on the North Sea in the Netherlands last summer in a mere 35 days. On the way, he supported children suffering from cancer on the basis of purchased kilometers. Katadyn supported the project with Trek’n Eat meals, Peronin, and a Katadyn Combi Plus filter. After successfully crossing the finishing line, Reto Hunziker sent us the following words: “Started the day with a Trek'n Eat muesli and a Peronin choco-shake! Just after that, I used the Katadyn water filter to fill my drinking backpack with filtered water from the Rhine. A few kilometers downstream, a delicious lunch awaited me in my motorhome! You can see: you and your products have accompanied me every day on my way to the North Sea!”

New production site in Romania

New production site in Romania

We are laying new foundations for the future not only in Switzerland and North America. As Katadyn Produkte AG relocated its headquarters from Wallisellen to Kemptthal at the end of September, the Katadyn Group moved into a new factory in Romania. The facility is located near Brasov in the southern Carpathians. The purpose of this strategic move is to enable us to manufacture metal components ourselves in the future. In this connection, the Katadyn Group is deliberately relying on insourcing instead of outsourcing, since we used to purchase these parts from outside vendors up to now. The new factory in the extended EU is headed by a Swiss managing director who shares the high quality awareness of the Group, pays fair wages, and makes sure that the work conditions are in line with the standards of the Katadyn Group.
