Dear Katadyn Friends

As every summer, the OutDoor trade show in Friedrichshafen is once again just around the corner – the summit meeting of the international outdoor industry. 19,300 specialist visitors from all five continents and 72 countries make this trade fair a global show. The Katadyn Group will be present on site with its Katadyn, Optimus, and Trek’n Eat brands from July 14 – 17, presenting smart products for living in the great outdoors. Under the motto “Small but oho”, we will show the new Optimus (H)EAT Insulation Pouch which allows meals to always be eaten as hot as they have been cooked. This thermal pouch offers perfect space for the freeze-dried Trek’n Eat outdoor menus.

Talking about Trek’n Eat: The menu has now become richer through the addition of the Russian “borscht” soup. The meal contains neither colorants or preservatives nor taste enhancing additives and is gluten-free and low in fat.

There is also news from the Katadyn “Making Water Drinking Water” front: In 2012, the Hiker Pro Filter will be launched in Europe. In the U.S. outdoor market, the Hiker Pro is already the most widely sold microfilter. With its an unassuming black design, it should always be part of every tour.

We extend a very warm welcome to our specialist public and invite you to come and see us at the OutDoor exhibition in Hall A5 at Booth 113, where you can satisfy yourself on site of our product innovations!

The Katadyn Group has got off to an excellent start in the year 2011. Demand for our products clearly exceeds expectations. One of the biggest challenges that we are facing this year is the strength of the Swiss franc and the related exchange rate losses. But despite these difficult economic conditions, we continue to rely on Switzerland as the production site for our water treatment products. We will move to a new company building with double the previous production area starting in 2012 – as scheduled.

We look forward to sharing some thrilling moments and send you our best regards.

Trix Ammann
CEO

The Katadyn Group at the OutDoor show 2011 in Friedrichshafen

See us at the OutDoor trade show in Friedrichshafen (Germany) in Hall A5 at Booth 113 from July 14 – 17 and satisfy yourself of the uniqueness of our products! The OutDoor exhibition is a pure trade show and the international summit meeting of the outdoor industry.

Optimus (H)EAT Insulation Pouch – Eating hot what has been cooked hot

Optimus (H)EAT Insulation Pouch

There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad equipment. With the new Optimus (H)EAT Insulation Pouch, you will always eat your meals as hot as they have been cooked. This thermal pouch made of insulating material offers perfect space for the freeze-dried outdoor menus of Trek’n Eat, retaining their heat for up to 30 percent longer. It goes without saying that you can also cook menus in a small outdoor cooking pot, for example the Optimus Terra Weekend HE or Terra Solo. Very nice that also these pots fit snugly in the Optimus (H)EAT. Inserting it is quick and easy, thanks to the Velcro closure. The slip-in pockets on the sides offer a safe grip during eating. They protect your hands against the wind and cold as well as against heat of the cooking pot or packaging. With its very small packing dimensions measuring 17.5 x 20 centimeters, the Optimus (H)EAT Insulation Pouch takes up little space in your backpack and is hardly felt with its light weight of 77 grams. The Optimus (H)EAT will keep your meals hot to the very last morsel, even if you are enjoying them outdoors. Whether for outdoor enthusiasts or simply for people who love spending their time in Nature, the Optimus (H)EAT will always be found to be a really hot idea for a gift.

Katadyn Hiker Pro – also available in Europe starting in 2012

Katadyn Hiker Pro – also available in Europe starting in 2012

The Katadyn Hiker Pro is the most widely sold microfilter in the U.S. outdoor market. For its market launch in Europe in 2012, we have packed the previously gray-blue filter in a trendy black attire. The Hiker Pro is small, weighs a mere 310 grams, and thanks to its large filter area delivers an outstanding pumping capacity. It reliably removes bacteria, cysts, and sediments from water. On trips, you can easily maintain the filter thanks to its cleanable filter protector. The filter protector also appreciably extends the service life of the 0.3-micron glass fiber element. Its active carbon filling improves the taste of the water and eliminates odors. Thanks to its quick-action connectors, installing and removing the inlet and outlet hoses is child’s play. The new Hiker Pro replaces the Hiker filter in the European market.

New: Delicious “borscht” from Trek’n Eat

New: Delicious “borscht” from Trek’n Eat

The menus of Trek’n Eat have become richer by the addition of “borscht”, a Russian soup or stew. In preparing traditional borscht, prolonged low-temperature cooking is a must. With the freeze-dried ingredients of Trek’n Eat, it takes no more than 10 minutes. For this outdoor menu, a large number of fresh and nutritious ingredients such as beef, carrots, savoy cabbage, red beet juice, and celeriac have been blended with much passion. The meals contain neither colorants or preservatives nor taste enhancement additives and are gluten-free and low in fat.

Millet Expedition Project 2011: The 2nd expedition has started

Millet Expedition Project: Les maillons de la chaîne des Andes

The winner expedition “Les maillons de la chaîne des Andes” set off for their adventure on June 9, 2011. Florence and Franck, a young couple from France, plan to cover the 9,000-kilometer distance from Cartagena (Colombia) to Ushuaia (Argentina) by mountain bike. In addition to their cycling adventure, they also want to scale no less than 24 peaks, many of them higher than 6,000 meters. Katadyn France is supporting the Millet Expedition Project 2011 with the Katadyn, Optimus, and Trek'n Eat brands. The project was launched by Millet, a French company known for its high-mountain equipment. Young and ambitious sports adventurers are supported and coached in the project to enable them to realize their expedition dreams.

Ueli Steck: success on the Shisha Pangma

Ueli Steck: success on the Shisha Pangma

The Swiss extreme mountaineer and solo climber Ueli Steck has scored yet another success in his spectacular career. In the early morning of April 16, he was standing atop the Shisha Pangma after climbing 2,000 vertical meters for ten hours and a half. This is the third summit he has scaled with an elevation of over eight thousand meters. With its 8,027 meters, the Shisha Pangma is the fourteenth-highest mountain in the world and the only summit with an altitude over eight thousand meters that is located completely in Tibet. Steck is the first person to have conquered the peak solo taking the route through the southwest face. Since 2009, Katadyn has been supporting Ueli Steck with Katadyn products for preparing drinking water, expedition foods of Trek’n Eat, and outdoor stoves and stove accessories of Optimus.

With Peronin at the Cape Epic Race

With Peronin at the Cape Epic Race

In 2010, Katadyn Germany supported André Hauschke, an experienced alpinist and passionate endurance sports aficionado, with its liquid food Peronin in his quest for setting the bicycle world altitude record of 6,085 meters in Chile. The positive experiences he gained during last year’s venture motivated him to ask Katadyn to join the support team again in 2011, during the Cape Epic Mountain Bike Race in South Africa. The race rightly has the reputation of being the most grueling event of its kind throughout the world, says Hauschke. As for nutrition during this extreme effort, he says of his secret weapon Peronin: “Peronin is absorbed within all but no time even under extreme physical exertion. It is a terrific powder! Thanks a lot to Katadyn Germany for the mix of Trek’n Eat Meals, Oat Snacks, and Peronin!” We congratulate André Hausche on his excellent 29th place in the Cape Epic Race.

Seeking the perfect wave

Seeking the perfect wave

Thomas Oschwald has been seeking the perfect wave since the end of June. This Swiss adventurer is determined to paddle with a stand-up paddling surfboard across a distance of about 5,000 kilometers from Geneva across the Atlantic and back again to Basel. On various rivers and coastal stretches, he will cover up to 100 kilometers a day entirely on his own and without any support. Not much space is available for taking along baggage on a paddling surfboard. But a Katadyn Pocket water filter will be on board to supply the adventurous paddler with clean drinking water whenever he needs it. We wish Thomas Oschwald all the best and many thrilling moments on his route!

Markets & Customers

New packaging design for Katadyn filters

New packaging design for Katadyn filters

From the start of 2012, Katadyn will switch its entire filter range to a new packaging design. The new appearance is designed to make it easier for customers to decide which product to purchase in stores. It offers the most important information at a glance in an attractive, clear, and modern look. The wide variety of water purification systems offered in the shops make it hard for consumers to get a clear picture. Many travelers are spoilt for choice when faced with the wide selection of products available. Portable water treatment products offer travelers additional safety during their vacations and should be included in every first-aid kit. Yet different products offer different levels of protection. Water systems for surface water are health devices, not camping accessories. They must work in a variety of conditions. Beware of products that are well suited for certain conditions but advertised to work in all conditions. Most travelers need a product that performs well in a variety of water conditions. Your health is our concern – please choose your personal drinking water system carefully. The new Katadyn filter packaging will help you make the right choice.

New whole-grain muesli rolled out by Trek’n Eat

We invite you to try the new breakfast muesli version of Trek’n Eat. This wholesome and crispy whole-grain muesli with fruits and berries is just what you need for a successful start into your outdoor adventures!

Trek’n Eat: New packaging sizes

Trek’n Eat: New packaging sizes and labelling

The packaging sizes of the outdoor menus of Trek’n Eat have been adjusted to cover the increased energy consumption during sports activities. The Trek’n Eat meals are now based on a value of about 600 calories per individual package. All the meals are available in reclosable stand-up pouches and now also include allergy information on the packaging. The new concept eliminates the need for dual packages and the clear range of products simplifies the choice. The new packaging sizes will be available in the marketplace starting in 2012.

Chiapas, Mexico: Lower incidence of diarrhea disorders thanks to Katadyn Drip Filter

Chiapas, Mexico: Lower incidence of diarrhea disorders thanks to Katadyn Drip Filter

Now the Mexican Ministry of Health has officially confirmed it: The Katadyn Drip Filter, which has been distributed for years to households in the Chiapas region, is making a vital contribution to reducing the disease and mortality rates among the indigenous population. In the four regions in which just under 27,000 persons use the Katadyn Drip Filter, diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders have been reduced by as much as 75% over the past few years. According to the World Health Organization, water is of primordial significance in public health management. As long as access to healthy water and appropriate sanitary facilities is ensured for everyone, an important battle will have been won in the fight against a large number of diseases, regardless of the differences in specific living conditions. Since 2007, our Mexican partner Bio Derivados has committed itself together with the governmental organization Sedesol and the Mexican Ministry of Health to the continuous improvement of the water quality in the remote region of Chiapas.

Katadyn filters for households and schools in Thailand

Katadyn filters for households and schools in Thailand

As part of a project launched by the Rotary District 2000, 260 Katadyn filters have again been distributed to households and schools in northern Thailand since the start of this year. The population in the villages affected typically live in very simple wooden huts roofed with leaves. Only few houses have electricity, and where electric power is available, it is every now and then unavailable often for several days due to outages. The water in the villages is supplied from rivers and lakes which are so contaminated that it cannot be used as drinking water. Diarrhea disorders are therefore common both in children and in adults. Putting these 260 gravity filters into service is part of an extensive project. The filters are very easy to use and widely accepted by the population. They can be immediately used following just a short period of training. The principle of a gravity filter is based on two plastic containers, which are placed one into the other so that the top one seals off the bottom one. One or more Katadyn ceramic elements are screwed into the bottom of the top container. The top container is filled with contaminated water, which percolates under the influence of gravity through the Katadyn filter into the bottom reservoir and is thus purified. The reservoir is provided with a faucet for tapping the clean water whenever needed. Katadyn offers its Drip Filter as a standard version. But for the project in Thailand, the plastic containers were locally produced in order to support domestic businesses.

Rower survives a fortnight thanks to Katadyn desalinator

Rower survives a fortnight thanks to Katadyn desalinator

Victor Mooney, an American, was ultimately lucky despite all his misfortune: During his third attempt to row from the Cape Verde islands to New York in order to draw the world community’s attention to the continuing propagation of aids and HIV, his rowing boat named “Never Give Up” sank just after he had set out on his trip. For a fortnight, he stuck it out on his inflatable life raft without food before being rescued by a cargo ship. He only survived thanks to his Katadyn Survivor 35, which enabled him to turn the seawater of the Atlantic into drinking water. Mooney’s comment on the Katadyn desalinator: “It is nothing short of a miracle! The Katadyn Survivor 35 supplied me reliably with the drinking water I needed.” A manual Katadyn desalinator should always be part of every emergency kit and the equipment on a life raft. The Survivor 06 and the Survivor 35 are compact, lightweight, and easy-to-use devices which will supply drinking water in emergencies and thus prevent dehydration and save lives.

Katadyn desalinator in the NASA research laboratory

For once, Katadyn desalinators are not used on boats, but in a research laboratory of NASA. The U.S. researchers apply it to test technologies that will enable people to survive as long as possible in outer space. In particular, these scientists are working on a method that will allow drinking water to be produced from service water, condensate, and human urine. In this project, also the Katadyn Survivor 06 and PowerSurvivor 40 desalinators with their reverse osmosis technology are applied.

Katadyn Group sales grow yet again

Katadyn Group sales grow yet again

In 2010, the Katadyn Group increased its sales revenue (turnover) by 15.8 percent to CHF 44.3 million (2009: CHF 38.2 million). The operating profits of the Group rose 1.65 million to CHF 7.8 million (2009: CHF 6.1 million). One essential contribution to this growth was made by Katadyn Industrial Water Treatment AG (KIWT), in which Katadyn acquired a stake in 2009 and thus expanded its business field by adding industrial and municipal water treatment activities.

New headquarters and production facility of Katadyn Produkte AG

The excavation work for the new company building of Katadyn Produkte AG in Kemptthal is in full swing. Plans are to start moving from the present site in Wallisellen starting in 2012. The building construction project is an investment in the future of the Katadyn Group. As a result of continuous growth over the past years, the existing production site was stretched to its limits. The new, modern production plant will satisfy the rising demand for our products while at the same time fulfilling the stringent requirements for environmentally friendly production processes. Despite the current high price pressures, we are deliberately further relying on Switzerland as a production site for our water treatment products in order to continue to supply you with the top-class Swiss quality that you have become accustomed to.
