Letter from the CEO

Dear friends of Katadyn,

So the cold, wet spring hasn’t yet tempted you to head outdoors for a few days, a few evenings, or even a few nights? Indeed, summer has finally arrived, and we at Katadyn are now looking forward to a number of unforgettable outdoor adventures. Our first priority is to make your experiences in nature more enjoyable and more relaxing with simple and safe products.

Just in time for the largest European trade show, OutDoor, in Germany’s Friedrichshafen we’re launching the new Optimus Vega stove. This youngest member of the Optimus family of products was developed by our product managers only after close communication with our users. Thanks to its hose connector and an integrated liquid fuel mode, the Optimus Vega is exceedingly multi-faceted. I’m very excited about this new „star“ in the Optimus sky, and I’m also quite convinced that it will in fact be quite a star!

With great innovations like this, we’re entering the outdoor summer season quite enthusiastically. High demand for our products continues and, especially in the United States, we’re seeing sales like never before. More and more outdoor enthusiasts rely on our Katadyn water filters and Optimus stoves when on the go, and they enjoy the self-sufficiency  offered by them when outdoors.

Best wishes for a fantastic start to the summer outdoor season!

Trix Ammann

CEO

NEW: Optimus Vega Stove

NEW: Optimus Vega Stove

At the OutDoor trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from July 12-15, the Katadyn Group will introduce the new Optimus Vega Stove. The Vega is a high-performing remote canister stove with an integrated 4 season mode: When cooking in cold temperatures or when extra fast boil times are needed, just open the gas canister support legs, turn the gas canister upside down and continue cooking. The Optimus Vega thus offers two ways of cooking in one stove and fills the gap between the technically often demanding multi-fuel stoves and the gas burners, which can only be used to a limited extent in sub-zero temperatures. The Vega will be available in 2013.

New Fish Dishes by Trek’n Eat

New Fish Dishes by Trek’n Eat

For year, the impetus behind Trek’n Eat has been to provide you with culinary delights when you’re on the go. Quality, great taste and variety are our first priorities. Our dishes should deliver a true „joie de vivre“ and excite you every day during a big adventure. Inspired by the fresh air and scent of the mediterranean, Trek’n Eat has come up with the Mediterranean Fish Stew with Rice, using only the finest ingredients. Of course, anyone who loves something a little more exotic should try the Red Fish Curry. Like all products from Trek’n Eat, the new fish dishes contain neither artificial colors nor preservatives nor added flavor enhancers, and all carry the ALL NATURAL label from Trek’n Eat.

Globeboot in Dresden, Germany

Katadyn Germany at the Globeboot in Dresden, Germany

On May 12-13, 2012, the boat show „Globeboot“ celebrated its 20th anniversary in Dresden, and Katadyn Germany was exhibiting with both a water filter station and a Trek’n Eat tasting station in its booth. It was in 1992 that canoes were shown for the first time at Globeboot. There were about 50 attendees there to test the 20 boots, says Ralf Moser, from the Globetrotter branch in Dresden. These days, about 3,000 people bustle around the grounds annually.

Arc‘teryx Alpine Arc‘ademy

Arc‘teryx Alpine Arc‘ademy

Approximately 70 men and women alpinists took part in the premiere of the Arc’teryx Alpine Arc’ademy from June 8-10, 2012, a unique training weekend at the Aiguille du Midi in the French Chamonix region. Along with setting up a bivouac camp and preparing meals and cooking outdoors, participants also slept outdoors under the stars at the foot of Mont Blanc. Ines Papert shared her alpinist adventures with attendees and graciously handed out advice. Katadyn made sure participants were well-fed by supplying Trek’n Eat products.

GORE-TEX Experience Tour – AlpCross 2012

GORE-TEX Experience Tour – AlpCross 2012

Look too for Katadyn at the end of August 2012 during the highly sought-after AlpCross Tour. There, it will supply Trek’n Eat delicacies during the bivouac, which will include such well-known alpine celebrities such as professional photographer Bernd Ritschel, mountaineering legend Hans Kammerlander, weather expert Karl Gabl plus Yann Delevaux, renowned as „The Guide of Chamonix.“ From among countless event applications, eight were selected to fulfill their dream of crossing the mountain range on foot from Austria’s Ötztal to Schnalstal in South Tyrol in seven days. The diverse and exclusive route they will set out to conquer includes approximately 75 kilometers (46.6 miles), with ascents and descents totaling 7,000 meters (nearly 23,000 feet). Each day participants will be on their feet between four and nine hours. Highlights of the tour include a trek across the glacier on Similaun, climbing the Wildspitze (at 3,770 meters/12,368 feet, the second highest peak in Austria), bivouacking a night under the stars, and of course accomplishing this alongside the well-known alpinists.

Defence Services Asia Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur

Defence Services Asia Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur

Once again, just as last year, Katadyn Singapore was an exhibitor at the Defence Services Asia Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. During the show April 16-19, all eyes were not only on Katadyn filters and desalinators, but also on Swiss Army knives by our long-time booth partner Victorinox. Only one thing caught more attention by show attendees: The short appearance of our Swiss alphorn players.

Seminar: „Efficacy of UV Disinfection and Preservation using Silver Ions“

Seminar: „Efficacy of UV Disinfection and Preservation using Silver Ions“

Together with local partners, Swisspro and Aquafides held a seminar on May 9, 2012, for representatives from the bottling, soft drinks and pharmaceutical industries in Jakarta. Along with this presentation, the team was able to tour the area Coca Cola bottling plant where our Aquafides 1 AF400T UV disinfection system was recently installed. The 1 AF400T is our specialist for poor water qualities down to 2% UV transmittance [100 mm]. This system with 1 UV lamp is the only certified UV system on the market for such poor water quality; however, its performance is also impressive for all ranges of water quality.

Annual Meeting of the Millet Expedition Project

Annual Meeting of the Millet Expedition Project

In April, Katadyn France met in Chamonix with outdoor industry partners involved in the Millet Expedition Project to decide which expeditions the project would support in 2012. Again this year numerous teams applied for support in product, financing and technical assistance for their projects. Ten groups made it to the finals with projects like a canoe trip in New Zealand or scaling El Capitan, the famous granite face in Yosemite National Park in California, by a climber with physical disabilities. Especially worthy of mention was one by French alpinist Sophie Denis, who lives in the United States and who wants to be the first woman to climb all 14 of the highest 8000-meter (26,246 feet) peaks in the world.

Pharmagora – The Pharmacist’s Exhibition

Katadyn Frankreich an der Pharmagora Apotheker-Messe

The French trade show for pharmacists, Pharmagora, took place this year in April in Paris. Katadyn France was on hand with a booth, which was bustling with international dealers from the global pharmaceutical industry. In addition, the first anti-mosquito bracelet from our brand PharmaVoyage was sold for distribution in Spain, Portugal, and is coming soon in Greece. Did the huge, not-to-be missed „Stop Mosquitoes“ booth signage have something to do with the success?

Outdoor Academy in California

Outdoor Academy in California

Product knowledge is very important when selling or buying drinking water systems. Retail sales staff must  know the special features of each product for the best outdoor experience. To support this knowledge, Katadyn North America participates in outdoor training events throughout the U.S. Hundreds of retail staff attend these training sessions to learn more about the outdoor market and Katadyn & Optimus products. Participants are always interested to learn and how to effectively sell each product. Katadyn North America management and sales reps work together to make each event a succcess and strengthen the Katadyn brand. Over 700 outdoor retail staff from California, Nevada and Arizona attended two separate training events in Northern and Southern California in April. Katadyn North America reps Harrison Walls and Martin Loef, along with Bret Whitnah from Katadyn North America conducted hands on training  and water filter and stove demonstrations at the event. Retail staff were impressed with the ease of use of Katadyn products compared to the competition. A key benefit is that Katadyn products can be used in nearly ALL CONDITIONS. Many new products on the market (UV and Hollowfiber) are best in clear water only. Retail staff who attended the Katadyn & Optimus training event came away with more knowledge about  how to position Katadyn & Optimus against other brands.

Trail Days Festival in Damascus, Virginia

Trail Days Festival in Damascus, Virginia

Thousands of people walk on the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine each year (approximately 3,515 kilometers).  In May, a special Trail Day Festival is held in Damascus, Virginia to honor of the “Thru-Hikers”. Katadyn North America has attended this event for the past 12 years providing product support and education to support  each Hiker who attempts this long trek. Katadyn North America sales reps John Harvey and Hunter Orvis, along with Tristan Loar from Katadyn North America hosted a Katadyn & Optimus booth at this year’s event.  Most hikers on the trail use Katadyn water filters. Some hikers start their adventure using other brands and switch to Katadyn & Optimus along the trail. Durability and ease of maintenance are high on the list of products requirements by Thru Hikers. Katadyn appreciates the ongoing support of Katadyn retailers who are located along the Appalachian trail.

Northern Minnesota Adventure

Northern Minnesota Adventure

Northern Minnesota is a wonderful area for camping and traveling over water in canoes.  It is a U.S. National Park and there are no powerboats allowed in many areas.  It is a unique experience for all who travel there.  Unfortunately, many children with challenged personal situations cannot participate in this adventure.  To help spread the enjoyment of the outdoor experience, Katadyn North America supports Minnesota’s specialty outdoor retailer Midwest Mountaineering to help send more children to an outdoor camp each summer.  These children learn things that are very special to them and hopefully brings them joy in ways that they have not before experienced.  Katadyn is proud to be a sponsor of this program.

The branch is modern, airy and clearly arranged, offering outdoor enthusiasts everything their hearts desire. Katadyn, Optimus and Trek’n Eat products are displayed beautifully with new POS and banners. Despite gorgeous weather on the grand opening weekend, many people still found their way over to the new Bächli branch. Immediately after you walked in, former cook and now Bächli staff member Michael Bachofner welcomed you with a taste of our Pasta Primavera dish by Trek’n Eat. You could also indulge in a taste of our Chocolate Mousse, Caramel Amaretto Creme, or Creamy Pasta with Chicken and Spinach. Most of the customers weren’t yet familiar with our freeze-dried dishes and were enthusastic over how good they tasted and their high quality.

Breath-taking vistas at 2,500 and 3,200 meters (8,200 and 10,500 feet) helped them forget their foot pain and muscle aches!

French Army Places Large Pocket Filter Order

French Army Places Large Pocket Filter Order

Katadyn France delivered 1,200 Katadyn Pocket Filters in February to the Namsa company for the French military. These were intended for use by special forces on emergency missions. We’re pleased that the French Army pays such attention to clean drinking water, and that we were able to fulfill this contract for them.

„A Journey for Water“ – from Hamburg to India

„A Journey for Water“ – from Hamburg to India

It kicked off in April: Sören Wolf from Bielefeld, Germany, started his trip to India by foot and by hitchhiking. He intends to travel through Eastern Europe to Iran and, from there, take a plane to Asia. Then his adventure will continue from the coast of Vietnam through Cambodia, Thailand, and Burma until he reaches India. One of his motives for the trip is the drive to go exploring, while another is to support the non-profit association Viva con Aqua (VcA). Each kilometer he walks – some 9,000 total (5,592 miles) – he wants to transform into clean drinking water in the form of drinking water projects in developing countries. In his bag Sören Wolf has a ceramic Katadyn Pocket Filter. We wish him a trip full of impressive experiences and a grand time! Find out more in his blog.

Arved Fuchs: Expedition to Northwest Greenland successfully comes to a close

Arved Fuchs: Expedition to Northwest Greenland successfully comes to a close

Happy yet rather exhausted, the German polar researcher Arved Fuchs and his three companions arrived on Pentecost Sunday at the final point of this year’s expedition to Avanersuaq, the most remote spot in the north of Greenland. From Greenland’s Qaanaaq, Fuchs drove two traditional dog sleds and a total of 21 dogs along the Northwest coast of Greenland to the Humboldt Glacier. The team took the inland ice route on its return to Qaanaaq during which they often completed 25-30 kilometers (15.5-18.6 miles) in a day. All told, the team covered approximately 800 kilometers (nearly 500 miles). As on earlier expeditions, Arved Fuchs relied again on products from Trek’n Eat and Katadyn. Over the course of the expedition, it became a huge challenge for both man and beast: Steep glaciers, sudden changes in weather conditions with heavy snow storms, plus travel in deep snow made forward motion for the sleds difficult. Expedition leaders also had to change the originally planned route because the ice along the coastline had broken up for the season so early. Fuchs was forced to take a detour over the Meehan Glacier that challenged the team greatly with its steep ascent. „From the beginning we were totally surprised about the effect of global warming on the region,“ Fuchs said. Shortly after his return, Arved Fuchs had the honor to accept the nine-year-old B.A.U.M Special Award from the German Environmental Management Association for his multi-faceted involvement in environmental and climate protection.

Mike Horn, Young Explorers Expedition, Amazon

Mike Horn, Young Explorers Expedition, Amazon

At the beginning of March, adventurer Mike Horn, who was born in South Africa, traveled with a group of 10 young adventurers to the Brazilian Amazon. The goal of the Young Explorers expedition was to show the youth the eco-system of the rainforest and the problems that are associated with it. Katadyn has supported Mike Horn and his expedition for years with desalinators, water filters and Trek’n Eat expedition meals. For the Amazon expedition, Katadyn offered ceramic filters to the young adventurers so they could set up a water filter project together with the natives. As soon as they arrived, the youth went searching for appropriate housings for the Katadyn ceramic filter elements. In Manaus they struck gold, and on the very same day they put together the water filters on board the Pangaea expedition ship. Once underway, the young people distributed the filters in villages and to families all along the Rio Negro and Amazon rivers. The adventurers described how impressed they were by an encounter with Isariah, a shrimp fisherman they met on the Amazon. After he invited them to his home and showed them the traditional style of living, the young people decided to gift him and his 10-member family with a water filter. With the Katadyn water filter elements, the family – including a then-10-day-old baby – can enjoy clean and bacteria-free water in the future. Participants in the expedition learned over the course of their trip in the Amazon what it means to have drinking water and gained a real appreciation for that.

Ueli Steck: Everest Summit Success

Ueli Steck: Everest Summit Success
.......

„There are a few things in the life of an alpinist that you just have to have done. For me this was an ascent of Mount Everest.“ The 35-year-old Swiss Ueli Steck is one of the best alpinist in the world. On May 18, 2012, together with his partner, 21-year-old Tenji of Nepal, he conquered Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. After Erhard Loretan and Jean Troillett, Steck is now the third Swiss to have achieved this. Katadyn has supported Ueli Steck since 2009 with products for treatment of drinking water, plus expedition meals from Trek’n Eat, as well as stoves and accessories from Optimus. Heartfelt congratulations to Ueli Steck for his successful expedition!

Trek’n Eat, Optimus and Katadyn take part in Space Mission Experiment

Trek’n Eat, Optimus and Katadyn take part in Space Mission Experiment

In March 2012 a research team made up of members from the University of Glasgow and Strathclyde (Glasgow, Scotland.) and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, put into action the SUAINEADH („SHA-naid“) Space Experiment. SUAINEADH was launched from a rocket into outer space with the mission to deploy a  2-x-2-meter web (2.2 x 2.2 yards) during the micro-gravity phase of a rocket flight. Such deployable structures are used in space flight to save room and weight in a rocket. The team wanted to verify the functionality of the technology under real conditions. After completion of the mission, SUAINEADH began its return to earth but was lost along with all of its cache of measurements and photos. From Aug. 18-25, 2012, a seven-day recovery mission to the Polar Circle in Northern Sweden is planned. Katadyn is fully outfitting the crew: Katadyn water filters, Optimus stoves, and Trek’n Eat meals.

1,333K Run for Kids

1,333K Run for Kids

Run and, at the same time, earn money for cancer-stricken children. The Swiss long-distance runner Reto Hunziker wants to take on 1,333 kilometers (828 miles) from the source of the Rhine River in Switzerland to its mouth on the North Sea in The Netherlands to do just that. The starting gun went off on June 13. Reto Hunziker is inviting anybody and everybody to take part in his project either by „buying“ kilometers that will go to the Swiss Cancer League (Krebsliga) in Zürich (www.krebsliga-zh.ch), or simply by tracking his progress using the iPhone app Live-Tracking where his real-time location can be seen. Katadyn is supporting the project, „1333km Run for Kids“ with Trek’n Eat meals, Peronin, and a Katadyn Combi Plus Filter that you can use to get clean drinking water any time when on the go. With accessories available for the Plus, the filter can also be directly attached to the faucet of a camper van. Best wishes for success from us to Reto Hunziker!

One Woman – Four Deserts

One Woman – Four Deserts

In the last newsletter we reported on Anne-Marie Flammersfeld. She is the German sport scientist and endurance athlete who wants to cross the four largest deserts in the world in one year – running and totally on foot. In March she traveled to Chile to the Atacama Desert. Six days and 250 kilometers (155 miles) later, she was the first woman to reach the finish line with an overall place of 13th in the first of the race’s four desert stages. Hearty congratulations to Anne-Marie Flammersfeld for this incredible achievement. Participants in the „4Deserts“ race put on by the „Racing the Planet“ organization are totally self-sufficient during the event. They carry all of their own gear and food. Water and a tent for sleeping are already set out and prepared  for participants. In the Atacama Desert Anne-Marie Flammersfeld relied completely on freeze-dried meals from Trek’n Eat. With about 600 calories per package, the carefully prepared meals are well-suited for the high energy needs of performance athletes. Anne-Marie Flammersfeld was enthusiastic about her Trek’n Eat dishes and found her tentmates were quite envious of her „Swiss Premium Food.“ As of June 10, 2012, there was again sand under the feet of the sport scientist. She has been running through the windy Gobi Desert in China, a race with seven stages, each covering between 30 and 40 kilometers a day, and achieved the incredible 4th place! Again the athletes had to be be self-sufficient, and Anne-Marie Flammersfeld again filled her backpack with Trek’n eat. Meals. The 33-year-old extreme athlete is raising awareness for the Paulchen Esperanza Foundation, which champions the interests of disadvantaged children in developing and threshold countries. For Flammersfeld, the Sahara Desert in Egypt is next up in October, leading up to the finale of the series in November in Antarctica.

German Alpine Club’s Women’s Expedition Team

German Alpine Club’s Women’s Expedition Team

For years, next generation alpinists with the German Alpine Club (DAV) have used Trek’n Eat meals, Optimus stoves and Katadyn filters when on the mountain. Last year, the DAV Expedition Team was expanded to include a women’s team. Katadyn is thrilled to be able to support the young alpinists with products like this that are key to survival. In April, the women’s team was off to France for alpine ice climbing. After the demanding adventure each day with plenty of wind and narrow cracks, the young mountaineers indulged in a meal from Trek’n Eat. Dubbed by the group as their „Haute Cuisine à la Trek’n Eat,“ it provided them with the necessary energy to tackle the next ascent in the early morning hours the next day. The women’s team is mentored intensively on its expeditions by experienced mountain guides and top alpinists and are being prepared for grand alpine sport challenges in the mountain ranges of the world. We look forward to hearing more news from Caro, Charlotte, Christina, Mirjam, Ursula and Yvonne!

Positive Outcome for 2011 in a Difficult Environment

Despite difficult economic conditions, 2011 goes down as a successful year in th ehistory of the Katadyn Group. Due to the strength of the Swiss Franc, sales for the group sank by 4.4 percent despite an increase in sales. However, thanks to targeted measures to increase productivity and to optimize material sourcing, operating profits reached 17 percent or nearly the same level as the previous year.
