Dear Katadyn Friends

At long last summer has come, and with it lots of sun and temperatures around 30°C. Here at Katadyn, we are enjoying the lovely weather to the full. This is so although our production equipment is humming at full capacity and the thermometer in the assembly shops regularly climbs to fearful levels in the afternoon.

This makes it all the more pleasant to spend the evenings and weekends out in the open, be it during sports, a camping weekend with the family, or simply a barbecue party with friends on the terrace or in the garden. If you want to be particularly cool and “green” this summer, you will not haul water in PET bottles to the beach or the lakeside, but show everyone how easy things are when you use a water filter. This, incidentally, will enable you to make easy contact with others … For example by talking about the new Katadyn MyBottle, which has been on the market for a few months now and is already being used by many active people who are used to moving autonomously in open Nature. To learn more about the new Katadyn MyBottle, simply visit www.katadynmybottle.com.

The Katadyn Group with its Katadyn, Optimus, and Trek’n Eat brands can look back on a successful second quarter. Sales were particularly brisk in May and June. Among other things, this was also due to the supply of Optimus products to the Swedish military.

The trend toward spending one’s leisure time actively is continuing unabated, and outdoor products are booming. This also benefits Europe’s leading trade show for outdoor equipment. The OutDoor will be held in Friedrichshafen from July 15 – 18. We look forward to taking part again this year with a booth and seeing one or the other of you personally!

The Katadyn MyBottle is here!

Katadyn MyBottle Purifier

The new Katadyn MyBottle has been on the market for a few months now and is already revolutionizing drinking water treatment in outdoor applications. And now we have just been informed that the MyBottle has won the OutDoor Industry Award 2010. Gone are the times when you first had to tediously boil your drinking water outdoors. The Katadyn MyBottle supplies pure drinking water anywhere and at any time – quickly and easily and without requiring any pumping and without using batteries or chemicals. Thanks to its integrated three-stage water filter, the MyBottle is the perfect drinking system for all needs. To learn more about the MyBottle, we invite you to visit our MyBottle product website.

New: Couscous with chicken from Trek’n Eat

Freeze-dried Trek'n Eat outdoor menus

The food designers of Trek‘n Eat have devised yet another creative outdoor menu for the coming season. Following Italian Pasta Primavera, Salmon Pesto with Noodles, Indian Chana Masala, and Bio Chili Puree with Vegetables and Hemp Crispies, the culinary journey this time takes us to the Maghreb. A mouth-watering Couscous with Chicken awaits outdoor fans who gather in a relaxed atmosphere around the nightly camp fire – fully in line with the North African tradition. As all other Trek‘n Eat meals, this couscous contains neither added preservatives nor added taste enhancers. The couscous will be available from the autumn of 2010 as a single or double serving in a resealable stand-up pouch with filling line. All Trek’n Eat products have a shelf life of three years.

Distilled water is a potential risk to health

Katadyn Combi filter in use

An article in the Singapore Straits Times that appeared in March points out that consumption of distilled water over an extended period of time may entail health risks. In the nineties, drinking water treatment by distillation became very widespread, both for household use and for sale of bottled drinking water. But investigations have shown that the consumption of distilled water for a prolonged period of time may be problematic, as the water almost entirely lacks vital minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium as a result of distillation. With the filters of Katadyn, these minerals are retained in the water. The filtered water is safe, has a natural taste, supports the body functions, and strengthens the immune system. The filters also get good grades for their energy balance, since they do not require any chemicals or batteries or any other electric power sources at all.

OutDoor in Friedrichshafen, July 15 – 18, 2010

Katadyn at the OutDoor Trade Show in Friedrichshafen, Germany

We are happy to announce our presence again this year with a booth at the OutDoor, Europe’s largest trade show for outdoor equipment that is held in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Under a single umbrella, the Katadyn Group will present its three outdoor brands Katadyn, Optimus, and Trek’n Eat. Last year, we announced the Katadyn MyBottle, and now it is here and already revolutionizing drinking water treatment in outdoor applications. The MyBottle supplies pure drinking water anywhere and at any time – quickly and easily and without requiring any pumping. Thanks to its integrated three-stage water filter, the MyBottle is the perfect drinking system for active people who are used to moving around autonomously in open Nature. The Katadyn MyBottle was chosen from among more than 400 products for the OutDoor Industry Award 2010. To learn more about the MyBottle, we invite you to visit the MyBottle product website.

Also the Optimus stove brand is proving its innovative power. This year, Optimus is rolling out the Optimus Long Spoon, a piece of cutlery perfectly matched to the convenient resealable stand-up pouches of Trek’n Eat. The stand-up pouches have been highly popular for some time now, and the Long Spoon now allows the last morsels to be reached right at the bottom of the pouch. This is because the handle of the light-weight titanium spoon has exactly the length required to relish the outdoor menus with style after an adventurous day in the open. For example the new couscous dish with chicken that the food designers of Trek’n Eat have created. This couscous menu guarantees a cheerful night around the camp fire. As all other Trek‘n Eat meals, this couscous contains neither added preservatives nor added taste enhancers. The couscous comes in single and double servings in resealable stand-up pouches with filling line. All Trek’n Eat menus have a shelf life of three years.

New product videos

Katadyn MyBottle product video

Product videos are excellent tools for optimally and quickly conveying the benefits and the use of a product. New product videos are now available in English, German, and French on the new Katadyn MyBottle and our Optimus Nova and Optimus Crux outdoor stoves. Dealerships are invited to apply the videos at their points of sale.

France: Animated banner advertising on outdoor and travel portals

Katadyn France is now publicizing our products also on Internet advertising banners. The banner for Katadyn water treatment products, Optimus stoves and accessories, Trek’n Eat outdoor menus, and PharmaVoyage products now appear on major travel and leisure time portals such as Lonely Planet or Trek Magazine. The click rates of 0.75 to 0.90% are very encouraging and slightly above 50% of the average.

Eurosatory 2010

Katadyn water filters and Optimus stoves at the Eurosatory 2010

The Eurosatory, the largest international trade show for defense and security, took place in Paris on June 14 – 18. The Katadyn Group attended with a booth and presented the exhibition public the products of Katadyn, Optimus, and Trek’n Eat. Numerous international special army units use our products around the globe for survival support and for rescuing lives. Interest in our mobile desalinator units, water filters, stoves, and the freeze-dried menus of Trek’n Eat was lively and our attendance a success. Almost 60,000 visitors from all corners of the world convened to learn about the latest developments in the field of defense and security.

DSA defense exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Katadyn Singapur at the DSA in Kuala Lumpur

Katadyn Singapore took part in the DSA defense exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that was held on March 19 – 22. Water treatment is gaining increasing significance also in the armed forces. Especially the Katadyn Combi filter is being increasingly applied in the Asian-Pacific region in order to equip entire troops. And the Katadyn Expedition filter today is often part of mobile field kitchens.

Katadyn Singapore at the Singapore International Water Week

Katadyn Singapur at the International Water Week

This year again, Katadyn Singapore attended the Singapore International Water Week with its own booth on June 28 – July 2. As a city-state with very limited fresh water resources of its own, Singapore has assumed a leadership role over the past few years in Asia when it comes to sustainable and efficient water management. The water treatment products of Katadyn attracted numerous visitors and VIPs from all over the world to the booth.

Katadyn supports training program for outdoor retailers

Katadyn training program for outdoor retailers

Katadyn North America sponsored 2 Outdoor Academy training events in California in April. The events brought in over 800 retail sales staff over the course of 3 days. Retailers drove in as far away as Arizona and Utah to attend the event. Shawn Hostetter (KNA VP of Sales) and Bret Whitnah (KNA Sales Coordinator) and 2 local Katadyn Sales Reps (Harrison Walls and Martin Loef) conducted clinics each day to train retailers on the key selling benefits of Katadyn and Optimus. Retailers were very excited about the valuable information they received. They were also excited to have a hands-on demonstration with each product so they can relay the benefits of Katadyn over other brands to their customers.

GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run 2010 – The myth is alive!

Trek'n Eat at the GORE-TEX Alpine Run

On September 4 – 11, some 500 runners from over 25 countries will once again take up the Alpencross challenge when the 6th GORE-TEX Transalpine Run starts in Ruhpolding. In eight days, the contestants must cover 296 kilometers’ distance and more than 17,700 meters’ altitude in teams of two before they can slip into the coveted finisher shirt at the finishing line in the Italian town of Sexten. Since its premiere in 2005, the GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run is acknowledged to be one of the greatest challenges for mountain and trail runners. It has gained the reputation of an international, highly professional event that is emotionally intense for all contestants. The course leads over mountain passes up to 3,000 meters high and through magnificent valleys right along the main ridge of the Alps and will demand the utmost effort of everyone taking part. As in 2009, Trek’n Eat will supply the food for the runners at the finishing line.

Katadyn at trade show in Caracas, Venezuela

Katadyn in Caracas, Venezuela

Our partner Sipasa in Ecuador co-organized participation in a trade show in Caracas, Venezuela, together with the Venezuelan company Dimazcom. On display were our Katadyn water filters, expertly explained by a technical advisor – an engineer of the Sipasa company. Taking part in the exhibition was a great success for our Venezuelan partner, who is determined to provide access to fresh and pure drinking water to the population of Venezuela even in remote regions.

River water test in Venezuela: Katadyn filter beats them all

River water test with Katadyn filters in Venezuela

In connection with the trade show in Venezuela mentioned above, our partner also organized a river water test with water drawn from the Rio Guaire. The Rio Guaire carries rain and waste water from the capital Caracas and is considered highly contaminated. The filters of Katadyn achieved the best grade in the test: For the first time, they made this exceptionally contaminated water bacteriologically safe for drinking. In an interview that was broadcast by fifteen radio stations throughout the country, Ing. Cristobal Estrella of the Sipasa company discussed the outstanding result of the test.

Katadyn Germany at the FLIEGFIX-OUTDOORMESSE

Katadyn Deutschland an der Fliegfix Messe

Katadyn Germany took part in the FLIEGFIX-OUTDOORMESSE trade show at the Puttersee on May 7 – 8, 2010. This is Austria’s largest trade fair for lake kayaks, folding canoes, and wildness and expedition tents. Visitors enthused about the Trek’n Eat products. Needless to say that these were cooked on Optimus stoves using filtered water from the Puttersee lake.

EUROBIKE in Friedrichshafen, September 1 – 4, 2010

Katadyn at the EUROBIKE

This year, the Katadyn Group will for the first time take part in the EUROBIKE trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, which will be held on September 1 – 4, 2010. Cycling is a very hot topic, and the EUROBIKE with almost 40,000 specialist visitors from 75 countries is the leading exhibition of the bicycle industry. The EUROBIKE is primarily a trade show, but will also be open to all bike fans on the public day on September 4. The Katadyn Group offers a wide variety of products to sports, leisure time, and touring cyclists. They included, for example, the complete food Peronin for satisfying high performance requirements, the Trek’n Eat outdoor menus for enjoyable weekend cycling tours with overnight stays in the tent, and of course the water filters of Katadyn for trips around the world. We look forward to the fair and would be very happy to see you at our booth.

Markets & Customers

Anti-mosquito bracelet from PharmaVoyage

Pharmavoyage anti-mosquito bracelet

The Anti-Mosquito Bracelet from PharmaVoyage, which is marketed by our subsidiary in France, is evolving into a true sales hit. The bracelet, which was launched last year, has been excellently received and sold briskly right from the beginning. On the basis of the natural geraniol essential oil, the bracelet reliably keeps mosquitoes, ticks, flees, and other pests away. You can wear the bracelet on your wrist or ankle – needless to say that you will achieve the best effect with one each. In addition to the gray-blue bracelet already offered, Katadyn France this year rolled out a fashionable lilac-green color variant, which is highly popular with women and children. In the first half-year of 2010, Katadyn France sold as many as 30,000 units. The great advantage of the bracelet over sprays is its easy, environmentally-friendly use and the fact that it is easy on the skin. It does not emit any unpleasant odor nor have any sticky substances, and with 4.90 euros its price is very fair. The product is only available in France.

Experiment Mars500 with Trek’n Eat

Experiment Mars500 with Trek’n Eat

On June 3, 2010, the Mars500 project of the Russian Space Agency Roskosmos and the European Space Agency (ESA) kicked off. The project simulates a manned flight to Mars. It is expected to provide new information on how the physical and psychic performance of humans can be maintained under the extreme conditions of a long-term space mission. During the simulated space flight, six male test persons will be hermetically isolated during 520 days in a complex consisting of different space modules. Each of the test persons, who were picked on the basis of rigorous criteria, will have a cabin of three square meters available to them. Nutrition is eminently important in such a space mission. One of the persons responsible for creating the dietary plan is Dr. Jens Titze, a specialist for kidney and hypertension disorders at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany. Beside other food producers, he also approached Trek’n Eat to ask whether they would support the project by supplying an appropriate quantity of freeze-dried products. Trek’n Eat can be optimally utilized for scientific purposes, since the foods have very accurate and detailed nutritional value descriptions. Another positive factor is that the total salt supplied by Trek’n Eat products is low. A large number of Trek’n Eat products have already been supplied to Moscow for the 520-day experiment. We are happy to support the crew and wish them much success.

New cooking system for Swedish soldiers

Optimus Crux gas stove

The Swedish defense materials authority FMH selected Optimus and Katadyn for supplying a new cooking system for soldiers. The set is of modular design and consists of a Crux gas stove including a gas cartridge, a spirit stove, cooking pots with total contents of 1.8 liters of water, cutlery, a fire-resistant and multifunctional cloth, and other useful cooking accessories. Also included in the set are Micropur tablets for treating drinking water. As most components are made of titanium or hard-anodized aluminum, the whole set weighs less than one kilogram (!) and fits into a small bag. With this modular system, the troops will be optimally equipped for any assignment, be it a short-term or a long-term mission in hot or in cold climate zones.

Motorcycle trip from Seattle to Patagonia with Optimus Nova+

Optimus Nova+

On his motorcycle trip from Seattle to the southern tip of South America, the American Marshall Balick relied fully on the Optimus Nova+ gas stove. Beside its small packing dimensions and powerful performance, also the fresh green traits of the Optimus Nova+ stove convinced him to opt for this stove type. Marshall Balick says: “This thing is absolutely unbeatable. We used the Nova+ under the most adverse conditions and never had any problems with it. I could hardly believe how efficient the stove was. Day after day went by without my having to replenish the fuel cartridge. There was always enough left to lure another cup of coffee from the small green bottle. Another feature I must mention is the small magnetic cleaning needle – a true wonder which cleans the nozzle even while you’re cooking. The Powerline control valve was also of great help in adjusting the flame in a highly accurate way and from a safe distance. At the end of cooking, it is advisable to open the valve because otherwise it might jam when it cools down.”

Kayaking around Finland with Trek’n Eat

Two young women – 3,300 kilometers – 80 days. These are the key data of the mission of Miranda Nybondas and Louice Sehlberg, who plan to travel around Finland in a kayak. Finland, which is also known as the land of a thousand lakes (in fact, there are 187,888 of them), is criss-crossed by an entire system of largely interconnected lakes, branches of rivers, and rivers. This great water landscape makes a project such as that of Miranda and Louice possible in the first place. For feeding themselves, the two will have Trek’n Eat outdoor menus with them. This is a wise choice considering the low weight, the authentic taste, and the wide variety that these meals offer. To track the kayak adventurers, go to www.finland80dagar.com.

Mike Horn: Pakistan Expedition

The last leg of the Pangaea Expedition took Mike Horn and his young discoverers to Pakistan, where they ascended an as yet nameless 6,000-meter Himalaya peak. In mid-June, Mike Horn and his young team reached the top and baptized the mountain “Pangaea Peak.” We congratulate all members of the expedition on this accomplishment! The South African adventurer Mike Horn has been plying the seven seas with his sailing boat “Pangaea” since 2008. By 2012, he plans to have covered 100,000 kilometers. The goal of his expedition is to travel through all seven continents of our globe with all its elements such as deserts, oceans, and polar landscapes without relying on any engine power. As companions on the different legs of his trip, Mike Horn chooses young adventurers whom he can inspire with his passion for exploring our earth. We are supporting Mike Horn with portable Pocket water filters, desalinators, Optimus stoves, and Trek’n Eat food.

TOPtoTOP Everest Clean Up Expedition

Since 2002, the Swiss Schwörer family with their three children have been traveling on foot, sailing boat, or bicycle to the TOPtoTOP climate expedition over the seven seas and to the seven highest summits of this world. Their goal is to inspire young people with enthusiasm for a respectful treatment of nature. Together with volunteers, the two adventurers organize litter clearing campaigns on beaches and mountains and visit schoolchildren the world over to discuss environmental pollution. This spring, the three-month TOPtoTOP Everest Clean Up Expedition 2010 took the members of the expedition to the world’s highest peak. There, teaming up with volunteers and natives, they collected over one metric ton of litter. Regrettably, this also included uncountable empty water bottles. Especially these could be avoided by using Katadyn water filters, which enable water drawn from any stream to be filtered so that the need to haul along water bottles is eliminated. The TOPtoTOP Expedition is traveling with a Katadyn Combi, which supplies fresh drinking water at all times. We wish the Schwörer family continued success on their trip!

From zero to 6,000: a world record with Peronin

A team of German endurance sportsmen have succeeded in North Chile to reach an altitude of 6,085 meters by mountain bike. The three-member team headed by the Cologne sports scientist Frank Hülsemann made the whole ascent from the shores of the Pacific into the highlands of the Ojos del Salado Volcano completely on their bikes. Before taking up the challenge, Frank Hülsemann (Cologne), Markus de Marees (Cologne), and Andre Hauschke (Euskirchen) had for several weeks prepared for their high-altitude record in North Chile. The route took the team from the Pacific across 350 kilometers through the Atacama Desert and along small trails and across country to below the summit of the world’s highest volcano. Andre Hauschke reached an altitude of 6,085 meters on his mountain bike after Frank Hülsemann and Markus de Marees had to abort their attempt a short time before due to initial symptoms of high-altitude sickness. In all, it took the bikers six days for their ascent. An altitude of 6,085 meters is a new record which so far no one has ever achieved riding a bicycle. The team was assisted by three helpers in two supply vehicles transporting the equipment and food. The “ZERO to 6,000” project was scientifically prepared at the German Sports University. The entire trip was extensively documented with the aid of GPS and heart frequency and step frequency sensors.

Katadyn Germany supported the three endurance sportsmen with Peronin liquid food: “During our record trip, we used Peronin as a rapidly available energy source. Just before setting off for each leg, the bikers were given a serving of Peronin Cocoa or Vanilla for breakfast, and later on in the day we consumed Peronin Orange. In addition to water, each biker had a drinking bottle with Peronin with them. Whenever required, the team of assistants prepared a new serving during the meal breaks. Since the Silk Road trip in 2000, Peronin has always been part of such endurance projects, be it during the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring or in the Chilean Atacama Desert.”

Peronin at the Race Across America 2010

As the sole Swiss contestant, Thomas Strebel made it to the outstanding 5th place at the Race Across America, the world’s most grueling bicycle race, and this despite knee problems. In 10 days, 10 hours, and 3 minutes, the father of two covered just under 5,000 kilometers from West to East across the U.S. We congratulate Thomas Strebel on this incredible accomplishment. We supported the extreme cyclist with our Peronin liquid food, which endurance sportspeople have been successfully using for years in long-distance and ultra sports. We invite you to see for yourself what Thomas Strebel says about Peronin.

In a lake kayak, they spent a week in the group of islands off Stockholm. The Katadyn Combi water filter reliably supplied pure drinking water and the Optimus Nova gasoline stove the required heat to prepare tasty outdoor menus after a strenuous day of kayaking. And here is a secret tip from Alex: “Use the pan lid of the Terra cooking pots right-side-up when covering the pot to cook. It is easier to hold and you can keep food warm while still using it as a cover!”
