Now at retail: the new Gravity Camp Filters from Katadyn

Now at retail: the new Gravity Camp Filters from Katadyn

With the Katadyn Gravity Camp 6L and Katadyn Base Camp Pro 10L, you always have clean drinking water – and you won’t have to pump a stroke! At the heart of both the Base Camp Pro 10L and the Gravity Camp 6L is the newly developed Ultra FlowTM Filter Element. With its flow rate of up to 2 liters per minute, you can reliably filter bacteria, cysts and sediment. A cleanable filter protector lengthens the lifetime of the element so it can clean up to 1,500 liters of water. Both the 10-liter and 6-liter reservoirs have water level indicator windows so you can easily see when you need to make another trip to your water source. When you need to refill water, you can easily remove the tube with a quick-release valve equipped with auto shut off. That keeps the hose from coming in contact with contaminated water during refilling. The Katadyn Base Camp Pro 10L comes with a practical carry strap to make fetching water from a river or spring easier. Whether brushing your teeth, washing up, or quenching your thirst, plenty of fresh water will always be available with the Base Camp Pro 10L and the Gravity Camp 6L. And with the shower adaptor (available separately), nothing will even stand in the way of a refreshing shower outdoors. See this video to learn more about the only water filter that easily converts into a camp shower!

Professionals from all over the world gather there to discuss innovative solutions for reducing damaging environmental effects. Center stage this year were technologies to improve the quality of water and air, as well as the preservation of energy resources. Katadyn France used the platform to show  UV Systems by Aquafides, and Katadyn’s Electro-Katadyn Silver Ioniser and Multifilter  to interested professionals.

Ueli Steck nominated as "Adventurer of the Year" by National Geographic

Ueli Steck nominated as Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic. Cast your vote now!

Swiss extreme alpinist and solo climber Ueli Steck has been nominated by National Geographic Adventure magazine as “Adventurer of the Year” for his solo crossing of the south face of Annapurna. You can cast your vote for Ueli through Jan. 31 on the magazine’s website. For nutrition, Ueli Steck always has freeze-dried expedition meals from Trek’n Eat on hand. With their light weight, simple preparation and energy-saving fuel use, Trek’n Eat meals are very popular with many alpinists and expeditions.

Connoisseur’s summit

Trek'n Eat was the winner at connoisseur’s summit

The Swiss quality newspaper “Tages-Anzeiger” tested various outdoor freeze-dried meals with a judge’s panel consisting of alpinist Evelyne Binsack, Hyatt chef Frank Widmer and editor Daniel Böninger. The mission of the trio of testers was clear: To test seven prepared meals made especially for the outdoors that all cost about 10 Swiss Francs. The meals were chosen at random, in part in the United States, in part in Switzerland. “Mmmmmmm!” The Pasta Primavera by Trek'n Eat prompted this vocalization by Binsack. This meal was also later crowned grand champion. Even gourmet chef Frank Widmer found praise for the meal. That’s because he found in it what was lacking in many prepared meals: “A variety of colors make such a big difference – such as the green peas in the Pasta Primavera.”

Trek'n Eat goes to the southern end of the earth

Trek'n Eat goes to the southern end of the earth

An international team under the direction of Christoph Höbenreich headed out for the South Pole in January 2015. The six men – two Austrians, two Norwegians and two Germans – will finish off the “last degree” (the last 111 kilometers of the 89th latitude) with skis, tents and sleds  under their own power. In the endless, hostile, icy wilderness, they want to be fully exposed and to feel just a taste of what pioneers there experienced. As the team did on its last expedition in 2013, it once again put its trust in the expedition meals from Trek’n Eat. Said the expedition leader: “Trek’n Eat expedition meals cover a large part of our daily energy needs. You can basically expect that with modern freeze-dried meals. But with Trek’n Eat – and this is the key part and just as important – is that each evening meal is a real culinary delight!”

Expedition Cordón Riso Patrón takes along Trek'n Eat

Expedition Cordón Riso Patrón takes along Trek'n Eat

Franz Goerlich, Robert Koschitzki, Paul Sass and Uwe Seifert headed out for the Patagonian Ice Fields in mid-August. The goal was Cerro Riso Patrón, an extremely prominent mountain on the western edge of the southern ice field. Difficult to reach, unpredictable weather, totally unknown ice conditions …this is what primarily characterizes the mountain there. The Expedition was planned for the southern winter on purpose to better be able to cross the glacier with sleds and skis. Of course, winter also means freezing temperatures, avalanche danger and short days. The goal of Cordón Riso Patrón, however, could not be accomplished due to extremely poor weather. Still, on Aug. 26, the team was able to reach the nearly 2,700-meter Cerro Buracchio summit after 14 pitches on 70°-¬80° steep ice to become the first to reach the peak. A special thanks from the alpinists goes to Trek’n Eat. A significant amount of fuel and food weight could be saved with the expedition meals.

Katadyn supports OFF ROAD school project with Trek'n Eat

Katadyn supports OFF ROAD school project with Trek'n Eat

In the OFF ROAD Project, the Katadyn Group is backing an extraordinary initiative with its Trek’n Eat products. The primary goal of the project is to increase the self-esteem and self-confidence of at-risk youth and, as a result, to encourage them to return to school for an education. The project has held regular workshops for several years, which are followed by multi-day group outdoor experiential treks. A partnership with the Nelli-Neumann School, the Karl-Schreiner House with the social and welfare office of Essen, and Essen’s youth welfare office created the OFF ROAD project. The current project’s trip for select youth and their advisors is a 10-day trek to Italy. The tour deliberately is planned so that the youth – who carry their own packs, tents, sleeping bags and sleeping mats – cover about 10 kilometers daily and go through very isolated areas mostly away from civilization. The goal is for the youth to communicate with each other in first order and to develop a community feeling. Trek´n Eat meals enable participants to prepare food together, to enjoy variety in their meals, and to achieve a real outdoor feeling.

News from the DAV women’s expedition training team

News from the DAV women’s expedition training team

The original plan of the new 2016 DAV women’s expeditions team was to head to the Dolomites for a training camp. But non-stop rain this summer made climbing there impossible. The motivated alpinist women traveled instead to Italy’s Arco region on Lake Garda in better conditions. Only the heat and the torture of deciding where to go did them in. They took on everything from an easy warm-up climb over Alpine adventure routes to difficult multi-pitch routes. With the climbing experience, the DAV women turned into true experts. And they came up with an idea for a final expedition: Morocco in the summer. They’ve already acclimatized for that!... Katadyn Germany has supported the DAV expedition team for years with product from Katadyn, Optimus and Trek'n Eat.

Aquafides out and about in Indonesia

Aquafides out and about in Indonesia

In early November, Harry Luchsinger, Siti Suhardinah, Liringtyas, Liow Yong Zheng and Asep  visited various bottling plants, including those operated by Danone, Asahi, Suntori and Tirta Freshindo. The Aquafides team took away important knowledge about beverage processing and the integration of Aquafides Systems in the water filtration process (in particular, UV Systems and Electro-Katadyn Silver Ionizers).

Questionable water at dispensers in Malaysia

Questionable water at dispensers in Malaysia

Since the quality of the tap water in Malaysia leaves something to be desired, many people buy their daily drinking water at public water dispensers. Now, a test by the Malaysia daily newspaper The Star and Forum Air Malaysia, an organization that works together with the National Water Services Commission, has shown that the water from these dispensers is often contaminated with bacteria. Consumption can cause stomach cramps, diarrhea and other GI illnesses. The Malaysian Ministry of Health wants to tighten the rules governing the operation of such water dispensers. But why reach for dubious water? Our Asian partner Swisspro offers simple solutions for home water treatment, based on decades of proven technology by Katadyn.

The Star conducted the tests together with Forum Air Malaysia, an organisation formed to assist the National Water Services Commission. - See more at: www.straitstimes.com/news/asia/south-east-asia/story/bacteria-found-water-samples-malaysias-vending-machines-20140819

Career Day at Katadyn in Switzerland

Career Day at Katadyn in Switzerland

On Nov. 13 in Switzerland the National Youth Career Day was held. School children between the ages of 10 and 13 were invited to come to work with their mother, father or other guardian. The goal of the Career Day is to bust traditional gender roles: Teen-agers are encouraged to investigate professions that are traditionally considered normal for the other gender. With this, the National Career Day promotoes equal treatment of men and women in their choice of professions and life planning. At Katadyn’s headquarters in Switzerland, kids also took a whiff of the professional air. In the filter assembly area, they put together their own Katadyn Hiker Pro filter. Then they filtered water with it at a nearby creek and prepared freeze-dried Trek’n Eat meals with Optimus stoves. We’d like to thank the children for their visit and hope they had valuable experiences to take home with them.
