Letter from the CEO

Dear friends of Katadyn,

A full and successful year is coming to a close for the Katadyn Group. Like the Chinese proverb notes, „climb mountains to see lowlands,“ we have climbed many peaks, but we haven’t in the process forgotten to keep an eye out for new summits. In early November, we were able with great pleasure to announce that our U.S. subsidiary had acquired the assets of the company TyRy Foods, Inc. and, with that, its brands Natural High, Richmoor, AlpineAire Foods and Gourmet Reserves. In Europe, Katadyn already owns the leading brand for freeze-dried outdoor foods with Trek’n Eat. We are excited to have dehydrated foods on the program in the USA starting immediately. In the end, we want to offer our customers everything they need for the perfect outdoor cooking experience.

Certainly, not only outdoor enthusiasts get excited about our products. At the end of November, we were able to deliver 20,000 military stoves to the Swedish armed forces. The modular cooking system, which includes an Optimus stove, plus pots and utensils, outfits the troops for everything they may need, from long call-ups to short tours, in warm or cold climates.

Be aware that our offices and production will be closed from Dec. 24 to Jan. 7. The entire staff will take a long, well-deserved break over the holidays. In the name of Katadyn, I’d like to express my deep gratitude for our good working relationship and for the valuable input that we get daily from the sales team as well as from users all over the world.

Best wishes for happy holidays and a great, exciting and successful 2013.

Trix Ammann

CEO

Katadyn Group acquires the assets of TyRy Foods, Inc.

Katadyn Group acquires the assets of TyRy Foods, Inc.

Katadyn North America Inc. announced recently that it has acquired the assets of TyRy, Inc. TyRy is a privately held producer of freeze-dried and dehydrated instant meals under the brands Natural High, Richmoor, AlpineAire Foods and Gourmet Reserves. In addition to their extensive product line, they also specialize in co-packing services for all dry food goods.

“Katadyn holds a strong leadership position in the water filtration category. The acquisition of TyRy’s brands builds upon that position and establishes us as a leading provider in water filtration, camp stoves and dehydrated and freeze-dried food,” said Shawn Hostetter, President of Katadyn North America. “Katadyn already owns the leading brand of dehydrated food in Europe (Trek‘n Eat). We are proud to announce that the Katadyn Group will now offer dehydrated food in the USA. Katadyn has everything outdoor enthusiasts require for their camp kitchen.”

“Having the TyRy brands join the Katadyn team will provide us with a broader value proposition. This is a highly complementary combination that will benefit our customers, retailers and our employees. We are excited about the opportunity to bring these brands together” said Chris Voxland, VP of Operations for Katadyn North America.

The food business will now operate under the name Katadyn North America Foods, LLC. The combined organization will continue to operate out of both facilities in Minneapolis and Sacramento. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

NEW: Optimus Vega Gas Stove

NEW: Optimus Vega Gas Stove

The new Optimus Vega Gas Stove will be available at retail as of January 2013. The new Optimus Vega is a high performing lightweight remote canister stove with integrated 4 season mode. The Vega offers users two options for cooking: The efficiency mode is ideal for carefully controlled simmering. If a higher cooking capacity is needed, or if outdoor temperatures are particularly low, the integrated four-season mode is applied. The gas canister can be upended with a flick of the wrist, switching the stove to the liquid gas mode. The support legs are integrated in the valve housing and merely need to be extended. We are pleased to offer a stove in the form of the Optimus Vega that closes the gap between the technically often demanding gasoline stoves and the gas burners, which can only be used to a limited extent at subzero temperatures. In a stove test carried out by “Alpin” – a German magazine – the Optimus Vega was rated “excellent.”  Click here to get a look at the Optimus Vega product video.

The trade show’s audience is technical personnel from the areas of humanitarian aid programs that are involved in emergencies and catastrophes. The AidEx show was a great success for Katadyn with huge interest shown in our products. 20,000 Optimus Stove Systems for the Swedish troops

Once again, Optimus was selected by the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) as the supplier of stove and cookset packages for the troops. The end of November, we delivered 20,000 sets, or approximately 100 palettes. The military set is modular in design and consists of an Optimus Crux gas stove with piezo ignition and a newly developed windscreen, a spirit  stove, cook pots with a total capacity of 1.8 liters (60 fluid ounces), cutlery, a fire-resistant and all-purpose cloth, and additional functional accessories. Since most of the pieces are made of a hard anodized aluminum, the entire system weighs less than 1,100 grams (2.9 lbs) and packs into its own small bag. With this modular system, the troops will be well prepared for long or short tours in warm or cold climates.

Katadyn partners with COPLARE

Katadyn partners with COPLARE

Susanne Tölzel and Joachim Probst of Wiesbaden, Germany, have been traveling the world on a multi-year sailing adventure since setting off in early July 2011. They want to attract attention to COPLARE with their travels. „Coastal Plastics Recycling“ is an extraordinary project promoting intelligent recycling of plastic materials in developing countries. While it’s standard procedure in industrial countries to return used plastics to the manufacturing stream as secondary raw materials, there is a huge untapped potential in developing countries.

That’s reason enough for the Katadyn Group to outfit the two world cruisers. With them on board they have Trek’n Eat freeze-dried foods as well as a Katadyn desalinator PS 40E for water treatment.

„The watermaker serves us well. Unfortunately we couldn’t use it coming down the Inside Passage (Alaska) or in Sausalito (California) because the water just wasn’t clean enough. Whenever we have to actually carry water with us, we really miss the watermaker. The machine gives us a comfortable life that we truly appreciate. And the Trek’n Eat freeze-dried meals taste so amazing and are apportioned exactly right. Katadyn makes super products. Keep it up!“ came feedback from far away.

One Woman – Four Deserts. Success!

One Woman – Four Deserts. Success for Anne-Marie Flammersfeld!

German sport scientist and endurance athlete  Anne-Marie Flammersfeld has achieved her goal. She ran the Four Desert races -- Atacama, Gobi, Sahara and the Antarctica „desert of ice“ race – and finished all four in one year, the first woman to do so. What hadn’t been planned, however, was that she would also be the No. 1 woman in each race. We’re very excited and send our congratulations to Anne-Marie for this outstanding achievement. Participants in the "4 Deserts" Races put on by  „Racing the Planet“ must accomplish the races without support, relying only on the gear in their packs. Anne-Marie Flammersfeld relied on freeze-dried meals from Trek'n Eat for her food. After her huge success, she wrote the following on her blog (German only):

Dear Desert friends,

I did it. I broke every that could be broken by a woman in the 4 Deserts Race Series: I finished all four races in one year. I won all four races in one year. I won every single stage of each race and never lost one stage. I ran every race faster than any woman had every run them. 250km through the dry desert in Chile. 250km across the windy desert of China. 250km through the hottest desert of Egypt. And nearly 200km across the coldest „desert“ of ice in Antarctica. How do I feel? Magnificent! Happy! Overwhelmed! I am simply so excited!

Sailing Around the World with Katadyn PowerSurvivor

Sailing Around the World with Katadyn PowerSurvivor

Brits Graeme and Chris Henderson have realized a dream. They’ve been on a huge adventure since the middle of 2010 on their Ovni 395 yacht „Toots“ and write about their ocean adventures daily in their Online Logbook. Along for the trip is a desalinator from Katadyn. The PowerSurvivor 80E supplies them with fresh drinking water almost every day for onboard use. Graeme and Chris wrote an email to our U.K. distributor Mactra Marine Equipment how much they appreciated the service:

Hi Jim,

We thought you would like to know how the Katadyn PowerSurvivor 80E has served us since we bought it from you.

For the past 11 months we have used it nearly daily, powered for 90% of the time by our solar panels (200 watts) and D400 windgenerator; we have been careful to clean filters frequently.

The Katadyn has performed faultlessly.  The quality of water produced is superb and in many places far better than any water we can take on board locally here in the Windward Islands.  In Union Island it would cost us about £32 to fill our 430 ltr tank if we were to fill up with water from a dock.

All in all, we regard the Katadyn as being in the top 3 best bits of equipment we have on board.

Success for German Alpine Club Expedition Trainees

Success for German Alpine Club Expedition Trainees

The team of DAV (German Alpine Club) Expedition Trainees returned safely on Saturday, Nov. 3, arriving at the Munich Airport with success in their back pockets. The team achieved a first ascent during their five-week final expedition of a 5,910-meter (19,389-feet) mountain in Eastern Tibet, which until then was nameless. A total of three difficult new routes were laid through steep rock and ice flanks on the granite giants by the five up-and-coming alpinists. Ultimiately, they christened the mountain "Melcyr Schan,“ translated loosely from Tibetan as the „Forgotten Mountain.“ Located in the poorly developed Tschiburongi Valley, the peak is only 220 kilometers (170 miles) southwest of the Chinese metropolis of Chengdu that has more than a million inhabitants. Trainer David Göttler and expedition physician Uli Steiner accompanied the five young, accomplished mountaineers. Katadyn Germany provided the athletes with freeze-dried outdoor meals by Trek'n Eat, Katadyn water filters and Optimus stoves.
