Letter from the CEO

Dear Friends of Katadyn

The Katadyn Group began the new year with great vigor, and our dealers’ shelves in Europe, Asia and the U.S.A. are filled with our products ready for unforgettable adventures in the outdoors. Not much else stands in the way of a great spring season outdoors – all we hope for now is the arrival of spring weather soon. It’s high time to pull the hiking and biking gear out of the closet. I look forward to this summer in particular and can already share with you that we’ll be launching a couple of very clever new products this year.

In this spirit, I’d like to wish all of you a sunny begin to the spring!

Trix Ammann

CEO

Now at retail: Optimus Vega stove

NEW: Optimus Vega

The new Optimus Vega gas stove has been available at retail since January 2013. The high-performance gas stove with an integrated hose connector offers outdoor chefs two cooking modes in one stove: The “efficiency mode“ is ideal for precise simmer control and efficient gas use. If higher performance is demanded or in particularly cold temperatures, the integrated 4 season mode can be called into action. With a quick one-hand turn, the gas cartridge can be inverted and switched to liquid fuel use. A stand for this position is integrated into the fuel control valve and must only be folded open. We’re excited to offer the Optimas Vega stove which fills the gap between technical and sometimes challenging gas stoves and limited-application gas burners for use in below-freezing temperatures. In a recent stove review in the German magazine “Alpin,“ the Optimus Vega earned a rating of “very good.“ Click here to see an Optimus Vega product demo Video.

Optimus Vega best-in-test at tapir’s gear-review tour

Optimus Vega Testsieger auf tapir-Testtour

In early January 2013, the new Optimus Vega outdoor stove was put to a hard test by tapir, the oldest and largest independent retailer in Leipzig, Germany. The test conditions in the Thuringian Forest were outstanding with temperatures down to -13°C (8.6°F). You couldn’t ask for better conditions to push a gas stove to its limits. The Optimus Vega won over the tapir test team from start to finish and was declared the winner. In particular, the team called out the low gas useage of only 12 grams per liter of water, which clearly put the Optimus Vega head and shoulders above the competition.

60 Katadyn Survivor 35 Desalinators for Taiwan Coast Guard

60 Katadyn Survivor 35 Desalinators for Taiwan Coast Guard

Amidst the competitive manufacturer climate for desalinators in Asia, Katadyn was selected as the supplier of manual desalinators as part of the overall packages for Taiwan Coast Guard’s boats and life rafts. At the mid of February, we delivered 60 sets and expect another order in the near future to complete the supply of 100 sets. The fact of a higher cost for the Katadyn Survivor 35 does not push them away as they are going for a better quality product in the market. With these manual desalinators in place, the coast guard will be well prepared in case of emergency.

Katadyn Germany expands its portfolio with Swiss Advance

Katadyn Germany expands its portfolio with Swiss Advance

With Swiss Advance, Katadyn Germany GmbH has further expanded its brand and product portfolio. Founded by passionate paraglider Peter Meyer, the company Swiss Advance is perhaps the most authentic outdoor brand in the Swiss Alps. Partly because nearly every product must first be tested and proven personally in the field by Peter Meyer. Swiss Advance offers high-end design in everything that makes the outdoor experience more valuable and just a touch, shall we say, spicier: from salt and pepper shakers for home use or when traveling, and zingy herbs and chocolate energy bars for critical situations, to what could be the world’s lightest pocket knife.

Transhimalaya Expedition relied on Trek'n Eat and Optimus

Transhimalaya Expedition relied on Trek'n Eat and Optimus

Transhimalaya is one chilly project that mountain biker Claude Balsiger dared to take on in February. He planned to traverse 500 kilometers by bike, by foot and on skis along the frozen Zanskar River in the Indian Himalayas. And he planned to do this in the middle of winter with temperatures down to -30°C (-22°F). Balsiger was accompanied by mountain guide Thomas Wäspe and outdoor photographer Martin Bissig. Despite adverse weather conditions, health problems and gear failures, the team managed to finish about two-thirds of the planned route. The expedition had to call it quits just four days from the goal due to large avalanche danger. You can read about the expedition on its blog at www.transhimalaya.ch. Regarding technical aspects, the biggest challenge on the tour they said were the extremely low temperatures. Katadyn supported the expedition with its Optimus Nova+ stove and cookware as well as freeze-dried Trek'n Eat meals. „When you are traveling across the Himalayas on skis, you must have the highest-quality product,” said extreme biker Claude Balsiger. "In addition to being lightweight, we value in particular the robust durability of the Optimus. In such harsh conditions during the Himalayan winter, your gear has to be able to take a beating. That wasn’t a problem for the Optimus.“ Outdoor photographer Martin Bissig appreciated in particular the quick and easy preparation of the Trek’n Eat expedition meals. "With just some hot water, we had a warm meal in only minutes without having to clean up pots or cookware afterward. Decisive in our selection was the product’s great taste and natural ingredients.“

Trans Iceland ski expedition outfitted with Optimus and Trek'n Eat

Trans Iceland ski expedition outfitted with Optimus and Trek'n Eat

For more than 20 years, Jerome Blösser has been traveling across the deserts of our planet. Since 2002, as tour operator of wüstenwandern, he has led more than 1,000 satisfied clients on great adventures. A crossing of Iceland in the winter is something extremely few expedition teams have tackled. Together with polar adventurer Martin Hülle, Jerome Blösser led participants on this tour along the fittingly lonely traverse route that leads from the north, over the highlands and then across the Vatna Glacier all the way down to the south coast. As professionals, they have relied for years on the products of the Katadyn Group. Participants on this just-completed tour (March 17-April 7) used products from Trek´n Eat and Optimus.

Girl Power in Patagonia

Girl Power in Patagonia

Together with climbing partner Laure Batoz, the young mountaineer Caroline North traveled to Patagonia in early February 2013. Caro is a member of the women’s expedition team of the German Alpine Club (DAV). After several acclimatization trips, the two power women took on Cerro Torro (3,128 m/10,262 ft) via the Ragni Route as the first women’s team to do so. Due to difficult conditions, they had to turn back just two rope lengths from the summit, which nevertheless doesn’t diminish their feat. Just a few days later, the two alpinists stood on the summit of Fitz Roy (3,406 m/11,175 ft). Caroline and Laure kept themselves nourished with meals from the Trek'n Eat kitchen. „Your meals are simply inspired,“ Caroline wrote us after their return to Europe. “Thanks to Trek’n Eat, we were able to complete such a tour. When you are climbing for 5 to 6 days and if you have to carry heavy food too, it simply wouldn’t have been possible for us. The packs were heavy enough!“ We at Katadyn wish both women the best for their alpine careers.

Baffin Island Expedition April/May 2013

Baffin Island Expedition April/May 2013 with Optimus and Trek'n Eat

On April 16, 2013, the starting gun will go off for Roman Hutzli as he kicks off his adventure through the fascinating arctic world of rock and ice on Baffin Island. The actual goal of the expedition is Mount Odin, which at 2,134 m (7,001 ft) is the highest mountain on Baffin Island. Roman Hutzli wants to solo Mount Odin on a new route (rock, ice and mixed terrain). Katadyn supports the Baffin Island Expedition 2013 with freeze-dried meals from Trek'n Eat, an Optimus Nova stove, and the Optimus Terra Weekend HE cook set. We’d like to wish Roman Hutzli all the best for his coming adventure, and we look forward to more news on his Expedition blog.

German Alpine Club Expedition Team 2015 seeks athletes

German Alpine Club Expedition Team 2015 seeks athletes

The German Alpine Club’s (DAV) Expedition Team seeks new athlete applicants for the men’s expedition team 2015. With the successful completition of the men’s expedition teams 2010-2012, the club is looking for the next group of young up-and-comers. To that end, a pre-screening camp was held in Chamonix, France, March 23-31. The goal was to work together with participants on planning and undertaking challenging West Alpine tours. Additional technique and tactics were taught based on ability and then feedback given on personal performance. At the conclusion of the camp, the most suitable participants were to be nominated for the new DAV Expedition Team. Coming into play in the decision is not just performance, but also teamwork, motivation and fitting life’s goals. Katadyn Germany provided the athletes with freeze-dried meals from Trek'n Eat, Katadyn water filters and Optimus stoves.

Around the world by bike in the name of trees

Mohammad Tajeran of We Need Trees visits Katadyn in Switzerland

Iranian Mohammad Tajeran has been traveling by bike around the world since December 2006. The goal of his project, titled "We Need Trees," is to bring more attention to the importance of nature. Along the way, he is visiting schools where he tells stories about his experiences and impressions. In workshops, he also plants trees with students. Katadyn Switzerland is supporting the worldly biker with products from Katadyn, Optimus and Trek'n Eat. On his trip through wintry Europe, the freeze-dried meals from Trek’n Eat were really welcome. "The meals were simple to prepare and tasted outstanding. When you are traveling by bike and living mostly in a tent, there isn’t a lot of time and energy for cooking. The Trek’n Eat meals are perfect for me,“ Mohammad Tajeran said when he visited Katadyn in Switzerland. More information about the committed and engaged world traveler and his project can be found at www.weneedtrees.com.
