Dear Katadyn Friend

Off the stuffy couch and into the great outdoors – springtime has come!

With the first signs of spring emerging, also the new products launched by Katadyn, Optimus, and Trek’n Eat are appearing in the marketplace. We are particularly proud of the new Katadyn MyBottle, which will be rolled out of our factory in Switzerland right in time for the outdoor season. This convenient drinking bottle with integrated virus filter protects you against dubious drinking water – no matter where your trip will take you to. Learn more about the new Katadyn MyBottle at www.katadynmybottle.com.

2009 was an outstanding year for Katadyn. Among other things, this was also due to your valued collaboration, for which I extend my very best thanks to you. This year again, we will seek new distribution channels to cater to the needs of the growing global community of outdoor enthusiasts by offering them reliable products that stand up to the most rigorous applications. Our production sites are humming at full capacity to ensure that we will not run out of supplies.

The earthquake in Chile shocked us profoundly, as the disaster of Haiti had before.  We work closely with relief agencies and partners in both regions to provide safe drinking water to those affected by these disasters.  We called off our participation in the FIDAE (an important defense and aerospace trade show) which was scheduled to take place in Santiago Chile from March 22nd to 28th, in order to maintain focus on the disaster relief and reconstruction needed in the region.  We wish all the people in Chile as well as in Haiti much strength in rebuilding their countries.

And what I wish you now is a fresh start into the springtime!

Trix Ammann
CEO

Katadyn MyBottle launch

Katadyn MyBottle Purifier

Katadyn MyBottle Purifier is the ingenious drinking bottle developed by Katadyn and provided with an integrated virus filter. It allows pure drinking water to be prepared at any time and in any place without requiring any pumping. Katadyn MyBottle Purifier is ideal for treating small volumes of water, for example during hikes, trips, and sports. Katadyn MyBottle Purifier does not require any chemical agents or batteries. Every Purifier filter medium allows you to purify up to 100 liters of water, depending on the water quality. A manual counting mechanism integrated in the lid of the bottle indicates when the filter element must be exchanged. Katadyn MyBottle can also be used without the filter medium if it is filled with safe drinking water that has already been treated (in many places tap water). Its ergonomically shaped drinking beak with the soft mouthpiece can be flipped in and out with superior ease and is leak-proof. The convenient suspender on the lid allows the MyBottle to be easily carried or attached to a backpack. Katadyn MyBottle drinking bottle is BPA-free, has a neutral taste, and can be cleaned in a dishwasher. Learn more about the new Katadyn MyBottle at www.katadynmybottle.com.

New Trek’n Eat meals rolled out!

Freeze-dried Trek'n Eat meals

Many outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor sportspeople complain about the lack of variety of their meals during trips and excursions into the wilderness. The new selection of menus is rounded off by the Bio-Chili Puree with Vegetables and Hemp Crispies. Freeze-dried Trek’n Eat meals contain neither preservatives nor taste-enhancing additives. Their easy preparation, their authentic taste, their low transportation weight, and their reduced fuel consumption have convinced mountaineers, expedition members, and trekkers around the world. All single and double packs of Trek’n Eat now have a shelf life of three years and come in reclosable standing pouches with a filling line.

Katadyn at the Winter Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City

Katadyn and Optimus at the Winter Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City

From January 21 through 24, 2010 Katadyn USA presented the Katadyn and Optimus product innovations at the Winter Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City. The trade show was a full success. Dealerships and opinion-makers from the outdoor scene were enthusiastic about the new Optimus cooking sets. The heat exchanger on the bottom of the new cooking pans slashes the cooking time by 20% and thereby reduces fuel consumption. Our dealers in the U.S. are looking forward to increasing their sales through the new Optimus products and the freshly launched Katadyn MyBottle, the ingenious water bottle with a water filter.

Katadyn Singapore at the Defexpo in Delhi

Katadyn at the Defexpo in Delhi

For the second time now, Katadyn Singapore and Victorinox shared a booth at the Defexpo defense exhibition which was held in Delhi, India, from February 15 through 18. The Katadyn Expedition Filter and the Katadyn Combi are already being used by the Indian Army for survival aid and lifesaving. In the picture, Nikki of Victorinox India proudly demonstrates the working principle of the Katadyn Mini Filter. The Mini is the lightest and most compact ceramic filter offered by Katadyn.

Katadyn calls off participation in the FIDAE in Chile

We called off our participation in the FIDAE (an important defense and aerospace trade show) which was scheduled to take place in Santiago Chile from March 22nd to 28th, in order to maintain focus on the disaster relief and reconstruction needed in the region.

Katadyn at the Boat Trade Show 2010 in Düsseldorf, Germany

Katadyn desalinators at the Boat Trade Show in Düsseldorf, Germany

This year again, the Katadyn Group presented its products at the Boat trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany during nine days from January 23 through 31, 2010. A total of 1568 exhibitors from 55 countries presented boat premieres, new water sports gear, and equipment and accessories in 17 exhibition halls at the world’s largest yacht and water sports fair. With over 240,000 visitors, the exhibition clearly exceeded the organizers‘ expectations. This fills the crisis-ridden industry with much confidence and fresh courage for the future. The trade show was also successful for Katadyn. As every year, also international customers greatly appreciated our presence. The Boot exhibition is an excellent platform for Katadyn to obtain feedback on our products directly from end consumers. Our new exhibition booth design and the attractive displays of our Survivor and PowerSurvivor desalinators were true eye-catchers for visitors.

Reisen trade show in Hamburg, Germany

Katadyn at the "Reisen" Trade Show in Hamburg, Germany

Together with the largest German outdoor equipment provider – Globetrotter – Katadyn Deutschland presented our new products at the “Reisen” trade show in Hamburg from February 10 through 14, 2010. One of the great eye-catchers was the Katadyn “Show” counter, which was the ideal place to illustrate the working principle of our water filters and Optimus stoves. Since then, the counter has also been applied at the Intersport Adventure exhibition in Jena and the Globetrotter trade fair in Dresden. The visitors to the show also had the opportunity to taste our new Trek´n Eat menus. The carefully composed creations met with very lively interest.

Pure fun and adventure at the Transa Winter Festival 2010

Katadyn at the Transa Winter Festival 2010

For the sixth time now, Transa – Switzerland’s largest outdoor equipment provider – organized a spectacular winter festival for its customers. Some 75 people took part in various activities the midst of a hauntingly beautiful natural setting in Central Switzerland. The agenda included workshops dealing with camping in the wintertime, igloo-building, GPS navigation, and unforgettable snowshoe hikes under the expert direction of mountain guides and game wardens. This year’s festival was governed by the idea of “Respect for Nature.” Katadyn was invited to the event as a supplier and offered the participants energy-restoring mulled wine after their taxing workshops. You will find some expressive photographs of the Transa Winter Festival at the website of Transa.

Katadyn Hiker Filter in service at the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 2010

Katadyn Hiker Filter in service at the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 2010

In the midst of wintertime, adventure at the other end of the world beckoned: In the untouched Nature of South Patagonian, the 8th Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 2010 was held from February 9 through 17. It is one of the toughest adventure races in the world. The roughly 60 top athletes from all corners of the world competed against each other in teams of four across some 600 kilometers in the disciplines of mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, and climbing. It was up to the teams themselves to find their way through the distant regions. This year’s winners of the expedition race were the team from the U.K. Apart from the sports challenge, the organizers’ intention in holding the event is also to raise people’s awareness of the importance of preserving the fragile ecosystem of South Patagonia.

Katadyn supported the teams by providing them with 20 Hiker Filters which ensured permanent supplies of pure and safe drinking water. These lightweight and easy-to-use microfilters remove bacteria, protozoa, germs, algae, spores, and sediments from water. An activated carbon core acts against unpleasant tastes and odors.

Into the Wild with Katadyn and the Millet Expedition Project

Millet Expedition Project with Katadyn, Optimus and Trek'n Eat

The Millet Expedition Project was set up three years ago by the French Millet company, known for its alpine gear. As part of the project, Millet coaches young and ambitious sports adventurers in executing their expedition plans. Katadyn France is one of the partners actively supporting the project and the expeditions. The siblings Cécile and Olivier Cusin had set themselves the goal of fully autonomously hiking on foot through the Russian natural paradise of Kamtschaka. In 1996, Unesco declared the Kamtschaka volcano region a world heritage site. In this unspoiled natural environment, no traces of human civilization are visible. It is therefore not surprising that the world’s largest bear population can be found in Kamtschaka. In the midst of this wild natural setting, Céline and Olivier Cusin were completely on their own for three weeks. They limited their baggage to 11 kilograms of material and 9 kilograms of food. It included a Katadyn Pocket water filter, an Optimus Crux gas stove, Trek’n Eat instant meal supplies, Beef Jerky as an energy supplier between meals, and Peronin liquid food. The two reached their destination after 300 kilometers – tired yet in good health and with great memories.

Peronin at the Race Across America 2010

Liquid food Peronin for high performance requirements

The Race Across America will start on June 9. With its length of 5000 kilometers and its total elevation of 35,000 meters, it is arguably the toughest bicycle race in the world. The route runs right across the U.S. from West to East. According to the U.S. journal “Outside”, the RAAM is the most grueling sports event of any in the world. According to this list, the Ironman on Hawaii ranks a mere eighth. Every year, no more than 20 to 25 sports freaks take part in the race, and only about 40 percent make it to the finishing line. In order to cross the finishing line as a finisher, contestants must cover the distance in less than 12 days and 5 hours. This requires iron willpower and lots of energy – a clear case for our liquid food Peronin. This was also the opinion of extreme sportsman Thomas Strebel, who asked us whether we were prepared to support his participation in the Race Across America. We said yes, and now we wish Thomas Strebel the best possible preparation for the ultimate race!

Katadyn Singapore and Swisspro start training program

Katadyn Singapore and Swisspro start training program

In collaboration with selected universities and schools in Singapore, Katadyn and Swisspro aim to sensitize schoolchildren and students to various water treatment issues. The agenda includes seminars, workshops, and practice-oriented training events on our products. The first seminar on “Safe and healthy drinking water at all times and in all places” was held in the lecture hall of the Polytechnic in Singapore. A total of 320 students attended the event. A group of students presented the insights they had gained into students’ drinking habits. On March 11, Katadyn Singapore and Swisspro were invited by the Catholic Highschool in Singapore to a seminar. 600 students learned more about Katadyn and our business model. Other subjects included our values and Swiss identity, and how we have managed for many years to maintain an edge over competitors. Switzerland and Singapore have much in common: Both are small countries with few natural resources but high political stability, a legal system that works, and a business-friendly climate. Not least, both have substantial human resources with excellent training and education opportunities and a very good healthcare system.

Editor's Choice Award 2010 for Katadyn Vario

Editor's Choice Award 2010 for Katadyn Vario water filter

The editors of Germany’s largest outdoor magazine “outdoor” have awarded the Editor’s Choice Award 2010 to the Katadyn Vario water filter. According to the “outdoor“ editors, this distinction is reserved for absolute top products which have been tested through and through. In particular, they highlighted the ease of handling and the high pumping capacity of the Vario all-round water filter, which is achieved by its dual pumping mechanism. Its glass fiber filter element with activated carbon filling stops not only protozoa or bacteria, but also many chemicals. In addition, it improves the taste of the water. The superior ease of exchanging the activated carbon filling of the Vario and installing a ceramic filter ahead of the unit to treat heavily contaminated water entirely convinced the editors of “outdoor.” It prompted them to bestow the title of “Guardian of the Purity Law” on the Katadyn Vario – a label otherwise normally reserved to German beer brewing practice.

Pure drinking water for pupils in Chiapas, Mexico

Katadyn Drip Filter for schools in Chiapas, Mexico

In the struggle against blinding and diarrhea caused by contaminated drinking water in the Chiapas region in southeastern Mexico, our Katadyn Drip Filters are now also being applied in schools. The students understand the significance of pure drinking and service water for their health and treat the Drip Filters with the utmost care. The successes in the Chiapas region are evident: Over the past two years and a half, diarrhea diseases and other disorders caused by contaminated water have declined appreciably. The Mexican government has perceived the success of this effort and will therefore continue to invest in the population’s health together with our Mexican partner Bioderivados and Katadyn.

Jungle hospital in Togo relies on Katadyn Ceradyn Filter

Katadyn Ceradyn Filter in Jungle hospital in Togo

In a jungle hospital in Togo at the foot of Mt. Agou – which is Togo’s highest peak with an elevation of 900 meters –, the staff and patients rely on four Katadyn Ceradyn Filters. The water comes from the mountain and flows down pipelines to the hospital. Untreated, the water is deep brown, dirty, and absolutely unfit for drinking. But after the installation of the ceramic filters in a Katadyn household filter housing, patients as well as the staff and their children can now rely on safe and pure drinking water straight from the water faucet.

Bloggers test Optimus Crux Lite Solo cook system

Optimus Crux Lite Solo Cook System

A Finnish blogger has appealed in his outdoor blog to the community to test the Optimus Crux Lite Solo cooking system in the wilderness. For this purpose, he offers them his own cooking set to use, passing it on from blogger to blogger. Anyone interested can sign onto his blog hikinginfinland.com. The Crux Lite Solo cooking system is ideal for one person and consists of an Optimus Crux Lite gas stove, a 0.6 liter pot of hard anodized aluminum with pouring spout and gradations (ml and oz), a frying pan that can also be used as a lid, and a net pouch and nylon pocket providing optimal protection of the Crux Lite gas stove during transportation. For trips, the set also offers perfect space for a 100 gram gas cartridge and a Folding Spork.

DAV cooperation extended to 2012

Katadyn and the DAV

The young talent expedition cadre of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV) will continue to use products of the Katadyn Group on its trips, especially Trek’n Eat meals and Optimus stoves. The DAV is the competent specialist association in charge of mountaineering as a high-performance sport. It sets a sharp focus on the development of young talents. Highly qualified trainers work in small teams on the personal strengths and weaknesses of the cadre members selected. Particular attention is paid to the professional handling of objective risks in the mountains. The most up-to-date knowledge from the areas of tactics, belaying, mountain rescue, or avalanches is taught in theory and practice. At present, the cadre selection procedures are in progress. The new team will be introduced in time for the Outdoor 2010 trade show in Friedrichshafen.

Katadyn and the Globetrotter apprentices

Katadyn supports the Globetrotter apprentices

As every year, Katadyn supported the Globetrotter apprentices by supplying them with various products for their training tour, this time to Ireland. “The tour through Ireland was a true adventure and a challenge for the whole team,” says Jonas Skerra, apprentice at Globetrotter in Hamburg. “The invigorating Trek’n Eat meals provided us with the necessary energy for the strenuous tour.”
