Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends of Katadyn,

Just in time for the start of the “outdoor season,” the Katadyn Group has introduced three new products for the outdoor kitchen. For all those people who prefer to let somebody else take care of pumping the water, the new Gravity Filters from Katadyn are the perfect choice. The Gravity Camp 6L and the Base Camp Pro 10L are the ideal drinking water system at your campsite. Without the least bit of effort, they provide up to 2 liters of clean drinking water per minute for an entire group. This achievement earned an ISPO Gold Award in Munich, Germany, for the Base Camp Pro 10L.

The Polaris Optifuel multi-fuel stove from Optimus also earned an ISPO Award. It is unbeatable with its flexibility. With just one nozzle, it can use either gas or liquid fuels. And, thanks to the 4-Season Gas Mode, it can do this even in cold temperatures and in changeable spring weather.

So time to head out into nature. Adventures in the great outdoors are the best prescription for spring fever and everyday stress!

Trix Ammann

Executive Director

The new Ultra Flow Filter Technology makes them the fastest gravity filters on the market today. Optimus Polaris Optifuel also earns ISPO Award

The Optimus Polaris Optifuel multi-fuel stove won an ISPO Award in the Outdoor Stove category. When you have an enormous appetite for a warm meal but you don’t have the right fuel for your stove, a bad mood is guaranteed. The prize-winning Polaris Optifuel by Optimus is a quick remedy because it can operate on nearly any kind of fuel – and it can do so without the need to change nozzles. ONE JET – ANY FUEL. The Optimus Polaris is the only stove with just one nozzle for various types of fuel such as gas or liquid. It offers maximal flexibility with the highest heat output when you’re out and about. When using the stove with gas, you can also choose between the fuel-saving mode – for example when simmering soups or sauces – and the 4-Season mode for liquid fuel and increased heat output. When using this mode, the Polaris Optifuel keeps lousy weather and chilling cold at bay. The Optimus Polaris is available now at retail.

The Katadyn Group acquires the assets of U.S. company Spectra Watermakers, Inc.

The Katadyn Group announced at the beginning of the year that it has acquired the assets of the company Spectra Watermakers, Inc. Spectra Watermakers, Inc., headquartered in San Rafael, Calif., north of San Francisco, is a privately held company that manufactures desalination systems based on proprietary energy recovery pumps. The products are used in both the marine and land-based segments. As a part of a business succession strategy and to promote continued strategic development, owner Bill Edinger chose to sell his company to the Katadyn Group. The integration of Spectra Watermakers, Inc., into our current product line is a benefit for the partners of both companies. We are convinced this is a strategically important step, and we will invest strongly in this segment in the future. We will continue to expand the line of high-quality desalination systems for both the marine and land-based sectors. The merger is of utmost importance for the long-term competitive viability in this promising business segment. With it, the Katadyn Group becomes one of the most significant suppliers of small and medium-sized sea water desalination systems on the market.

Katadyn reacted to the latest changes in the handling and trading of chemicals

Katadyn reacts to the latest changes in the handling and trading of chemicals

The Katadyn Group manufactures drinking water treatment products under the brands of Micropur and Certisil, which are subject to the strict provisions of the EU Biocides Regulation. Micropur and Certisil products are made of silver salts which release silver ions when added to water. To comply with the latest changes in the EU Biocides Regulation, the active ingredient in Micropur and Certisil must be re-named. As of April 25, 2015, the term silver chloride may no longer be used; just the term silver. We have changed all packaging and products with the new active ingredient labelling are available as of now. "The Katadyn Group has and will in future only market products which comply with the law. The products currently available have been pre-registered and are therefore approved for sale. The current changes in the active ingredients have not changed the characteristics of the products" reports Carmen Heiter, Product Manager Water Treatment at Katadyn Products Inc. in Switzerland. Although all chemicals are not required to be labelled according to the new GHS/CLP guidelines (Globally Harmonised System, UNO System of global uniformity in the risk categorization and labelling of chemical products) until June 1, 2015, Katadyn has already changed the labels. Micropur and Certisil products continue to stand for reliable quality and effective disinfection of drinking water. The ideal companion while underway deactivates bacteria in water tanks and containers and maintains water that is free of germs, algae and odors. The products are available at specialist retailers.

Seagate in Singapore puts its trust in Swisspro water dispensers with Katadyn Technology

Seagate in Singapore puts its trust in Swisspro water dispensers with Katadyn Technology

With 6,500 employees, Seagate is one of the largest electronics companies in Singapore. The company just finished construction of a new building for the Research and Development Department called “The Shugart,” named for company founder Alan Shugart. To ensure the building’s approximately 900 employees always have access to fresh water, Seagate had 18 “Clima PISO” water dispensers installed in the building by our partner Swisspro. The water dispensers have integrated 3-level filtering systems and use first-class filter technology by Katadyn.

Austrian city of Villach relies on UV systems from Aquafides

Austrian city of Villach relies on UV system from Aquafides

The Austrian city of Villach purifies its drinking water using UV light and thus ensures its residents the highest water quality. For its water treatment, the city chose UV systems by Aquafides. They were installed last November and have been in continuous use since then. With a throughput capacity of 300 liters per second, the installation is one of the largest in Austria. UV light is a natural component of sunlight and contains a high amount of energy. Thus, it has the unique ability to inactivate microorganisms in the water. A UV purification system uses no chemicals, meaning no dangerous residues or by-products can enter the drinking water.

Irish Water chooses UV system from Aquafides

Irish Water chooses UV system from Aquafides

The Irish water supplier Irish Water set a company goal of bringing its water treatment systems totally up to date by 2021. At this time, only three of five systems satisfy the requirements of the EU – and one of those is the new UV System by Aquafides in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan. Within six years, the entire Irish population will have access to safe drinking water. In many areas, it is still recommended to boil water for use at home. In addition, 49 percent of treated water is lost from the water system as a result of leakage.

Cooking in Antarctica with Optimus

Cooking in Antarctica with Optimus

As a part of the Millet Expedition Projects Katadyn France supported a group of adventurers that crossed Antarctica on skis – with Optimus Nova+ Expedition Stoves  and Optimus Terra Cook Sets. Participants on the expedition covered 2,045 kilometers (1,271 miles) in 73 days. Conditions were extreme with temperatures down to -50° C, strong winds and the need to cross crevasses. With the Optimus gear, at least they could count on a warm meal each day!

The Millet Expedition Project is also now supporting international projects. For example, the group of mountaineers from Iran who will take on an ascent of Nanga Parbat (8,126 meters) in Pakistan in March. If they succeed, they will be the first to have achieved a winter ascent. Katadyn France is proud to assist the alpinists with both Optimus stoves and expedition meals by Trek'n Eat.

700 kilometers through snow and ice with Trek'n Eat and Peronin

700 kilometers through snow and ice with Trek'n Eat and Peronin

At the beginning of February 2015, Nicole Dörr from Huben in Priental headed out on an extreme adventure: She took part in the Yukon Arctic Ultra. The so-called YAU takes place in the Yukon Territory in Northern Canada and counts among the most difficult ultra runs in the world due to its length and temperatures down to -50° C. In 2013, the 46-year-old also was among race starters and was only one of two women who completed the entire distance. In 2015, she planned to cover more than 430 miles (almost 700 kilometers). Unfortunately, Nicole Dörr was forced to drop early after 225 kilometers due to tendonitis. Just as in 2013, she had also packed along Peronin as an addition to her Trek´n Eat meals. “Last time, that worked out stupendously. If I were feeling exhausted, I fixed myself a cup and was amazingly better very quickly. I’m not familiar with anything else that weighs so little but can give you so much energy. Afterward I felt a bit like Popeye!”

German Alpine Club’s women’s expedition team in the icy French Hautes Alpes

In early February, the women’s 2016 expedition team of the German Alpine Club (DAV) traveled to L'Argentière-la-Bessée in the French Hautes Alpes region for an ice climbing outing as their second team trip. From easy warm-up climbs on alpine adventure routes to difficult multi-pitch climbs, they did it all. Everyone benefited from the week. Spurring on both the experienced and inexperienced ice climbers among the alpinists was both a superior team spirit and mutual encouragement. In addition to technique, the focus was also on safety. Katadyn Germany has supported for years the DAV expedition team with products from Katadyn, Optimus and Trek'n Eat.

Ski expedition South Pole with Trek'n Eat

Ski expedition South Pole with Trek'n Eat

An international team under the direction of Christoph Höbenreich headed out to the South pole in January. Anyone who makes his or her way across Antarctica must deal with isolation, snow and constant bitter cold. For years, this expedition leader on Polar expeditions has used expedition meals by Trek'n Eat. “The freeze-dried meals satisfy all demands for professional use and don’t leave any of our culinary desires unfulfilled. The modern expedition meals not only cover most of our enormous caloric needs, but also offer a rich variety of culinary delights we can look forward to each day.”
